jt58203 Posted December 31, 2009 #1 Share Posted December 31, 2009 Their website looks great. Has anybody done this? It's an hour van/bus drive to get there--was that fun or informative too? Did you see great scenery or monkeys or other things along the way?
sunsetbeachgal Posted December 31, 2009 #2 Share Posted December 31, 2009 HI, We went to the Veragua Rainforest in November-very interesting guided tour but it really focuses on flora and fauna. NO monkeys but did see a sloth up in the trees when we were on the aerial tram. We enjoyed it. We also did the Tortueguero Canals (did it all through Oscar Brown) and saw some monkeys way up in the trees and more sloths in the trees. While both were very interesting tours, if your desire is to see monkeys close up, you may want to explore other options. Good luck!!
INSIDERS CABIN Posted January 5, 2010 #3 Share Posted January 5, 2010 Just returned. Bus trip had narrator, Jeremy, good English speaker all the way. Trip is only about 35-45 minutes, then there is an approach on one lane dirt roads with ruts and bumps and maybe puddles that takes another 15 minutes. Area near port is commercial, with a few blocks of housing. Tin roofed shanties, laundry hanging to dry, school kids. Scenery is very typical, just countryside and surprising to me-- a few scattered dwellings, not any little villages or crossroads--some cattle, some chickens, some goats, a sloth in a tree. Center is new, opened in July, 2008. Nice facility, good bathrooms and gift shop. Walkways have been constructed thruout the property, there are educational sign boards and excellent exhibits. You are in the care of an english speaking guide for the duration of your time there--ours was "hurben." WE took a short hike to the waterfall-a few steps and slippery when it rained, but scenic. For those not up to a minimal effort, there was another trek, no steps. The aerial tram ride is about 10 minutes-and we saw a sloth. WE did not see the jaguars. We did see at strawberry poisonous dart frog. There is a butterfly "environment" and a butterfly collection room. It is a research center. There is also a reptile/ frog display with glass viewing cages. And of further interest, there was a nocturnal frog in the forest exhibit, led by a guide with a flashlight. Bring a poncho-$1 at Target-we had about a 20 minute downpour and people got quite wet. It was quite warm and humid-think Houston. I really thought this was one of our most interesting tours in the Caribbean, and the guides were very good teachers!
khm1 Posted January 28, 2010 #4 Share Posted January 28, 2010 Is this tour possible from Puerto Limon? Sounds very interesting! How long of a tour is it?
Wansbrough Posted February 4, 2010 #5 Share Posted February 4, 2010 We booked Veragua rainforest trip through Okey Dokey Tours for our stop in Puerto Limon Costa Rica. Our guide "Harrison" met us as arranged outside the port and took us to Veragua Rainforest . Here we had a separate guide ("Stan") to walk us through and explain. He was so enthusiastic about the rain forest and its inhabitants and made the tour even more fascinating for us. The skies emptied while we were there and I have never seen rain like it. Gliding down the side of a rainforest valley in a open cable car in an absolute torrent of rain doesn't sound much fun but believe me it was amazing. We rounded the trip off with a boat ride down the Tortugero Canal with Harrison who was also very enthusiastic and informative picking out and spotting just about every animal that moved. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone! Can't wait to go back! :)
camofwilliamsburg Posted March 7, 2010 #6 Share Posted March 7, 2010 How much time did you have in port? What was the charge? Did it include lunch and drinks in the van?
