ottawagarden Posted January 8, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 8, 2010 Hi. We are a family of 6 with 4 kids ages 10, 12, 14 and 16. We are planning to stay for 7 nights in Maui before an NCL POA cruise in Aug 2010. We are looking to rent a condo, 2 or preferably 3 bedroom for the week. I am having difficulty narrowing down a location/good condo complex. Have been looking at Honua Kai and the Whaler in KaKa'anapali, but wondering if the Wailea area would be better. We will have 2 addtional days in Maui with the cruise, and will likely do the Road to Hana at that time. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! thanks
pizzalady1 Posted January 8, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 8, 2010 We will have 2 addtional days in Maui with the cruise, and will likely do the Road to Hana at that time. Something to think about: it would be better to do the RTH while you are in Maui before the cruise. If you wait to go during the cruise, and if you want to go the whole way, there is some pressure to get back early enough to get a parking place by the pier (5:30-6:00pm - ish). It would not matter at all when you got back if it were before the cruise.
Ladydee Posted January 8, 2010 #3 Share Posted January 8, 2010 With the ages of your kids, I think the Kaanapali area would be a better choice, though I am not familiar with that particular complex.
poolhalljunkie Posted January 8, 2010 #4 Share Posted January 8, 2010 A really nice part of the island with affordable lodging. Try Kihei in south Maui . There is alot of condos there . There are alot of beautiful beaches in the area . It is easy to get about anywhere from this area . Wailea is about 10 min down the road . The airport is about 20 mins. Try (HomeAway) it is a great site and easy to navigate . There is also websites for the Kihei area with alot of condo rentals . Good luck and have a great time . pspercy Posted January 9, 2010 #5 Share Posted January 9, 2010 I'm a west Maui fan tho' I know there's good places in Kihei as well ! Honua Kai isn't on Kaanapali Beach proper, it's a mile or so north of the main Kaanapali resort area, in fact it's across the street from the Mahana, Maui Kai etc. Condos we've stayed at are Noelani, Maui Kai, Mahana, Polynesian Shores. All have 2br, some have 3br. You can see aerial photos and one guy's opinions at: http://www.wizardpub.com/main/home.html also http://www.vrbo.com Another option is rentals of timeshare units, from individuals on, for example, eBay or sites like http://www.redweek.com, http://www.tug2.net or direct from Marriott etc. Most allow for Fri/Sat/Sun check-in for the week. Good hunting:)
pspercy Posted January 9, 2010 #6 Share Posted January 9, 2010 P.S. One thing I forgot to mention: many of the condos do not have a/c (or charge extra for it) so be sure to ask if that's important to you, I suspect it might be, in August.
Beach4me Posted January 9, 2010 #7 Share Posted January 9, 2010 I definitely think that the Kaanapali side would be better for a family with children. One place that you didn't mention is the Westin Villas. They have been running some really good deals. http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1406 They have a water park on property that kids seem to really enjoy. If you decide this is the place for you, be sure to join the Starwood Prefered Guest program before reserving. You can get even better deals/upgrades, etc as a member. Joining is free! www.spg.com Enjoy!
cccole Posted January 9, 2010 #8 Share Posted January 9, 2010 I think Kaanapali would be the best choice with all of the kids. Our children have really enjoy it. There is so much to do, but you still feel like you are in Hawaii. It is very safe so they would also be able to have a bit of freedom to explore on their own, especially the older children. It is a short walk down the beach to the Black Rock at the Sheraton where there is great snorkeling and the nightly cliff dive. If you are doing the RTH you might consider an overnight in Hana. We have rented there a couple of times with our children and they loved it. It gives you time to enjoy the area, walk to the hidden waterfalls, etc. JMO Cherie
