Carnival Smoking Policy - Legend

When booking our cruise this winter it was based on itinerary, not cruise line. We have now discovered Carnival permits smoking in all of its staterooms on Legend. I experience severe bronchitis whenever there is prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke. I would appreciate your opinions regarding stateroom air quality on Legend and Carnival ships with a similar smoking policy. Unfortunately for me, this is a serious health issue. Thank you for your responses.

Dont worry. If there is even a trace left when you open your cabin door, just call your steward and it will magically dissapear.

The Spirit class in general (and the Legend specifically) handles smoke the best of all the Carnival ships (IMHO).

I get bron. and throat ulcers with prolonged exposure to active smoke and we have sailed on all 4 Carnival Spirit class ships without an issue.

The other good thing about the Legend is that you can walk from Forward to Aft without walking through a designated smoking area. Now it will require you to go up one floor when you get to the casino, but a small price to pay to avoid an illness.

With 34 cruises in the past 10+ years....we have never walked into a cabin that even hinted of stale smoke. (I have a very sensitive nose)

BUT on the very RARE chance that you do detect something...there is a lot the cabin steward can do.

1. Magic spray (which is Ozuim. I carry it with me as well. Walmart automotive department)

2. They can change out the pillows and comforters.

3. They can clean the carpets. (takes about 3 hours to dry)

4. They can even replace mattresses if it is that bad. (which would probably only happen if there was a cigar smoker in there....which is not allowed)

I am so blessed....it is only active smoke that triggers my ulcers. I don't have to worry about stale smoke.

Have a wonderful cruise....

The only place smoke bothered us on our recent Legend cruise was in the casino. We couldn't stand to be in that place more than 5 minutes. They had a small non-smoking area in the casino but it seems like that's where all the smoke blew to. This was actually a good thing because we didn't loose much money.

Another example of how advanced research is a valuable thing...for sure.

You shouldn't have a problem.....

However, know that smoking is permitted in cabins, on balconies, some bars and lounges, the casino and on one side of the open decks.

Carnival tried a non-smoking ship once. It was a flop.

They do work really hard to ensure that non smokers and those sensitive to smoke have a pleasant cruise.

They are using ionizers in some of the smoking bars and casinos now. I wish they would put some in all of them. It would be a good thing to mention on a comment card.

They should not allow smoking at all in the cabins! It is not fair when those of us who do not smoke have to go into a room that stinks of smoke from the previous passengers. Also, it is not fair when you have someone on your floor smoking and you smell the smoke in your room! And please do not tell me about air fresheners and ionizers--you can still smell it!

Another note about smoking--it is not safe for passengers to light up in their cabins--a fire can start!

Smoking should be limited to certain lounges and outside areas of the deck.

I just got off the Dream a few days ago and now I have a very bad sinus infection. There was someone smoking on our floor and pretty much every area of the ship stunk of smoke! Passengers were not respectful of the non-smoking areas and ship personnel did nothing to enforce it!

On the bright side at least the ship didn't smell like poo

Never have smelled smoke in any cabin.. we have seen the machines they use to makesure of it.. if you have an issue with your cabin as mentioned tell your cabin steward..

Fires can start anywhere..

Smoking is limited to certain lounges and outside decks already...

As for your Dream cruise I guess the people smoking were actually smoking where they were allowed if nothing was done about it... because I have seen ship personnel do something about it.. if someone is smoking where they were not allowed...

I have been on both the Legend and the Pride, both spirit class. I am highly sensitive to smoke. I have decided it is the luck of the draw on these ships.

On our Legend cruise I had numerous problems with the smoke. The smoke went from the casino, back into the main lobby and up the atrium like a chimney. Depending on how sensitive one is, it was even noticable at the buffet, many floors above. The worst day was our return sea day. They warned folks they couldn't bring those Cuban cigars back to the US and it 'felt' like everyone and his brother, (or sis), lit up. It was AWFUL! The entire ship stunk.

That said, the cabin never smelled at all. The main theater lounge and main dining room were fine. One could usually find places outside that were pretty much smoke free. Beware though, the canopy over the rear bar near the adult area holds more smoke than one realises. That was where my first issues with the smoke began on that ship, with a bad reaction to both eyes and nose.

We had initially decided we would need to find another cruise line after our experience on the Legend. We LOVED cruising, but the smoke had been a major issue for me. We decided to give it one more go when I saw the Pride heading out of Baltimore.

The Pride was an ENTIRELY different experience. Yes, we needed to avoid the casino and the main atrium area. Most of the rest of the ship was no problem at all for us. I did avoid most of the dance/piano lounges, as I knew they permitted smoking in them. I avoided walking anywhere near the casino. We gave up looking at picts on the floor above the main lobby because of the smoke. It was okay to walk through if needed, but otherwise we simply avoided the general area. The buffet I could pick up a faint odor towards the atrium, but overall had no problem whatsoever with it. And again, our cabin was fine from the start.

My conclusions, after a mere two cruises, is it is the luck of the draw. A lot of smokers mean more smoke than can easily dissappate in the confines of the ship. Fewer smokers and the ship seems to handle the flow of the smoke better. Also itinerary and the port it is sailing from may be part of the difference. Port locations with stronger no smoking policies likely lead to fewer smokers on board. And if there is a place folks are picking up those Cuban cigars, hide that last day!!!

One highly sensitive person, two cruises, same class of ship, two very different experiences. Take it for what you will.

I want to thank everyone for their input regarding Carnival's unfortunate policy of allowing cigarette smoking in staterooms and many other areas of the ship.

As one respondent suggested, I should have done my homework before booking the cruise. I just didn't think of it because smoking was not permitted in cabins and most areas on our previous cruises aboard RCL, Azamara and Holland America.

With the known health risks associated with second hand smoke, I'm surprised Carnival's Lawyers and risk management folks haven't put an end to smoking anywhere aboard ship except for a few restricted areas.

After 25+ years with sailing with Carnival exclusively....we have been looking at Oceania for this very reason. Oceania does not allow smoking in the cabins, on the balconies or in the casinos.

In fact, they only have 2 very small designated smoking areas in the entire ship.

I wish that Carnival had been blessed with the forward thinking that Oceania had when the Paradise came out.

Had the Paradise had the Oceania concept....(very restricted smoking but not 100%).... I am confident it would be sailing today as ALMOST smoke free.

While the Paradise MADE MONEY (some folks have the misconception that it lost money...it did not) .... it did not make the MARS of the other ships or Corporate expectations AND it was harded to fill, because usually even the smallest family group has at least one smoker.

Groups are the lifeblood of filling any ship. This handicap, along with the fact that Carnival stuck it in Miami (instead of a more centrally located port) AND NEVER changed the route.... meant the ship was doomed to fail.

We probably would already be sailing some with Oceania, if it were not for our 18 year old son with Autism. He is comfortable on Carnival.

One other note:

Another VERY promising concept is the electronic cigarette.

Our dear friends used it on the Dream and were literally able to smoke ANYWHERE they wanted to.

It was a 9 day cruise and I was around them A LOT while they were smoking (exposed to the active vapors) WITHOUT one hint of discomfort!!!!

I don't know exactly how they work....but it could be the perfect solution with WIN WIN results for everyone!!!

Oh my, one person stunk up the ship:confused:.

Live in your world without smell and begin rally's to make the world to confine to your nose. You will probably get your way. Salt is next on the chopping block.

Celebrity and Disney both have stingent smoking policies.

I've never smelled a room reek of smoke on any of the ships I've been on with Carnival including the Legend.

There are venues for those that simply can't tolerate smoke, why not use one of those?

And doesn't Legend have the spa balconies now? There are none smoking.

good luck

The Legend does not have Spa Cabins...

only the Dream and the Splendor (and of course the Magic will)...woo hoo!!!

(not to be confused with cabins that happen to be on the Spa deck of other Carnival ships) :)

"Should" is a silly word in this scenario. It is their cruise line - they SHOULD do whatever the heck they decide. In the same way that other cruise lines with more stringent policies SHOULD do what they like... As a consumer, it is up to you to decide which line gets your business.

On the other hand, passengers SHOULD respect the rules and refrain from smoking in areas where it is not permitted...

There is plenty of room for everyone....

That is very good. Those things are loaded with nicotene but if there is no smoke, then no harm. It must really suck to smoke these days. Like a weight around your ankle. But, if that's what you want, ok. It''s just a downer to be so addicted.

Just curious....when the Paradise was non smoking wasn't it based in California? I know for us, we really aren't interested in cruising in that area. I wonder if a non smoking Carnival ship with a Florida home might be a lot more successful???
