Passport on Islands?

Do you have to carry your passport on the islands or can you leave it in your safe on the ship?

No, you don't have to and there are valid arguments either way. If something happens to you on the island, you would need your passport to fly home. We take our chances, usually take a copy of our passports with us, and leave ours in the safe. It's up to you!

We used our drivers license each time. Never needed our passports. Now, thats just for entry back to the ship for the local authorities. Some people will recommend that you carry your passport just in case you miss the ship.

We leave the copies in the safe. Most likely no problem and most posters here will say that they have never needed a passport.

However, my friend works for the US Embassy in Mexico, and she says to never go on foreign soil with out the passport. If there was a freak event or natural disaster, your quickest way to help at the US embassy is that passport, and not a copy of one.

Needles so say, we always take ours. Have a great trip.
