Another Quake - Cayman Islands

This is jaw dropping but a 5.8 magnitude quake just hit Caymen Islands.

 

Different fault line than the Haiti earthquake.

No news yet on injury or damage.

 

It is well west of Haiti and most likely not felt there.

I'm not surprised. The geology service said that there could be more earthquakes to the west of Haiti. I do hope there has not been severe damages or loss of life.

I've just picked around on the USGS site a little and it looks like it was a relatively minor shake to locals in the Cayman Islands and Guatemala. No known loss of life is being reported right now and the USGS isn't predicting much in the way of damage to buildings/structures.

 

Let's hope that's accurate:(

Oh my -- we just got home from DH having a minor surgery done this morning and then I took him out for lunch.

 

Turned on CNN when I read this and saw that it was a 5.8 -- doesn't seem to be too much damage.

Just checked FOX -- they said that it hit 45 miles east-southeast of the Capital -- George Town.

 

Only cell phone down right now.

The news stations are very busy covering our Massachusetts Senate election held today that I've heard no current news re: Grand Cayman. Happy to hear there was no injury or damage.

A 5.8 earthquake shook the Cayman Islands, south of Cuba on Tuesday morning, reports said.

On Monday morning, a strong earthquake rocked Guatemala and parts of El Salvador, but no there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in either country.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0.

The USGS says it hit Monday morning about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Guatemala City, where it was felt by many residents. There were reports of shaking in the Guatemalan countryside and in El Salvador as well.

Civil protection officials in the two countries says so far there are no reports of injuries or damage, but authorities are still checking.

was on cayman at time in 2nd storey of building. The quake was 40 miles away from the island. The first rumble felt like when a big lorry (truck) passes by a place and rattles it. The immediate 2nd was a little more sway and "felt" more like an earthquake. That was it. in 04 there was 6.4 magitude quake there. The taxi driver told us (and by looking around I can well believe) that the infrastructure in Cayman is sufficiently different to make disaster like what happened on haiti highly unlikely; the buldings have steel infrastructure and the codes have been upgraded since '04. So, not the same picture by any stretch for several reasons.
