New Thread about drinks and tips....

I had to start another thread because the other tip page is up to 19 pages and was getting off subject from the original post.

In the other thread someone mentioned the 15% tip added to a drink....then someone else came along and said you can to to guest services and have the 15% tip removed.....

So my question is.........

Has anyone ever removed the tip from the bartender, I am curious as to why......I guess i can see if you are a heavy drinker that would get expensive........

Example......at home if we go out we do not tip per drink.....we usually just tip 10-20 when the evening is over........and they are always happy and greet us when we come back.....

It'll be interesting to see what is costs me to drink... On dry land my Rum / Scotch is usually between 6.50 - 25+ per glass (depending on the Scotch). I"m wondering what kind of prices I'll run into on the ship. I usually tip a couple bucks a drink @ a bar, so that adds up for sure. But I've always been raised to be a big tipper.

Given the drink prices, I might just let the 15% ride, and see where I'm @ financially @ the end of the cruise.

I don't think I have seen anyone remove or reduce the Bartender/server tips for drinks. I have only seen the 10 per day per person tips adjusted for what ever reason. I thought the drink tips were there regardless....

So does anyone know???

Okay ... from what I understand ... and this might be wrong ... is that 15% is automatically added to your drink bill. To whom it goes (to the individual, into a pool), I don't know. But I don't think you can remove a gratuity from a specific bartender. You *can* remove your gratuity for your room stewards though.

because you took care of the bartenders, they are more than happy to see you return;)

as stated elsewhere here, ask anybody who has worked in the industry (full time or a moonlighter in another life - me:p ); tip early and we'll knock ourselves out in both appreciation & the hope that you'll like our service & return - often & sit in our station:)

"landbased" barstaff that is on salary typically must report %of tips as salary per IRS regs (whether they receive them or not), leading a prudent person to understand that tipping is the norm.

I don't know what the system is aboard a ship, other than an automatic gratuity is added to the tab.

On the Valor in March, I was at the pursers desk for something and I did see a woman having each and every tip (15%) taken off of her drink orders so it is something you could do. Wouldn't be worth my time personally.

Wow ... just ... wow.

I sincerely hope she tipped well and in cash.

In NYC and LI, drinks, like a martini- $12-15 per... So even with the 15% per drink.. it's still a bargain-

The cruise is 'not like at home'.. on the cruise there is no need to tip at the end of the night... as you have been tipping all along.

At home, it is customary to tip at the end of the night at the bar or the club..

So lets say you have 5 Drinks.. at $7 each..at a bar at home.. are you not tipping the bartender??... It should pretty much work out the same(at the very least) . don't you think?

Agree, it is just not worth the effort. As far as I am concerned the crew works their collective tails off to make sure that I have an enjoyable cruise. They earn every penny that that they get.

Some people do not Tip no matter what! Carnival will allow them to remove all 15% tips if they go to guest services or remove them when they sign bill.

I've never seen it done...and we consider it just part of the cost of the cruise, just as we do the tips (or service charge or whatever they want to call it) for room stewards and other service staff. We don't tip extra with every drink, but if we find a particular bar and/or bartender we like, and continue to seek him (her) out, then sometime in the middle of the cruise we'll leave extra, and extra on the last night.

On the NCL bar tabs, there's the 15% tip there..and an additional line, which I guess you could fill in if you wanted to. Maybe that's what has people confused? removing an extra tip when the 15% is already there??

I never remove or reduce any tips anywhere on a cruise ship for any reason.

Tipping is part of my travel expense and I budget accordingly.

I usually tip extra to the cabin steward and his assistant and the waitstaff in the dining room. In addition, if there has been a favorite bartender during the week, I'll tip him/her too.

The dealer in the casino gets a tip when I play; win, lose or draw.
