youngcruiser23 Posted January 28, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 28, 2010 Hi everyone! I have a question about food allergies. My brothers girlfriend who is traveling with us on our cruise in Oct is severely allergic to peanuts. Does anyone know if any of the food is cooked in peanut oil? Thanks in advance!! GXmanDC Posted January 28, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 28, 2010 Talk to the Maitre D as soon as you get on the ship. My nephew has severe food allergies, we alerted them on the first day. At each meal our waiter pointed out what foods he could eat and what he could not.
abhb Posted January 28, 2010 #3 Share Posted January 28, 2010 Contact them before you step foot on the ship. There is a number you can call to let them know about allergies. When we took our very allergic daughter on a cruise, I was advised to let them know before hand. They made sure that none of her food contained pineapple. cb at sea Posted January 28, 2010 #5 Share Posted January 28, 2010 You will HAVE to contact the "Special Needs Dept."...they are the ones who will make sure your food is sufficient to your needs.
youngcruiser23 Posted January 28, 2010 Author #6 Share Posted January 28, 2010 Thank you all so much, we will be contacting someone before we leave! Were also traveling with my cousin who is a vegetarian, should we let them know that as well? I should know the answers to these since i've been on a few cruises but I've never traveled with anyone that needs anything special. Thanks again! :D
rianvi Posted January 28, 2010 #7 Share Posted January 28, 2010 As posted definitely contact the cruiseline before sailing. Nut allergies can be quite severe...smell, etc can set them off. On of our cruises a young lady with peanut allergies ate most of her meals in the dining room. There they are able to make sure that the food is prepared with out being near nuts. Since her allergy is severe, she most likely carries an epipen. Just make sure that she that with her. Not in the stateroom. On most menus there is a vegetarian dish. But you can check with the line. Have a wonderful cruise. Rianvi:)
GXmanDC Posted January 28, 2010 #8 Share Posted January 28, 2010 Talk to the Maitre D as soon as you get on the ship. My nephew has severe food allergies, we alerted them on the first day. At each meal our waiter pointed out what foods he could eat and what he could not. I forgot that my sister-in-law contacted the Special Needs Dept. before we sailed. Definitely do that. We were impressed how important this issue was to our dinning room staff and how they handled it.
amybeth4 Posted January 28, 2010 #9 Share Posted January 28, 2010 No need to contact them about being a vegetarian. All the menus in the MDR have a (V) next to the veg dishes and there are always a couple of them.
youngcruiser23 Posted January 29, 2010 Author #10 Share Posted January 29, 2010 Thank you all for the responses! We will contact special needs dept before we go and make sure she carries her epipen at all times! Wouldn't want to ruin her first cruise because of allergies! Thanks again :)
