kathle2036 Posted January 30, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 30, 2010 We will be arriving a few days before boarding the ship (10/6/10). Would like to do a side trip to Assisi. Are there any tours from Venice to Assisi or would we have to go to Florence to pick one up.
sunsetbeachgal Posted January 30, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 30, 2010 Kathiie, Try posting this on the Italy section of the Europe board. If memory serves me, Assisi is quite a long way from Venice. If you have never been to Venice, there is so much to see right there, in my opinion. ExDean Posted January 30, 2010 #3 Share Posted January 30, 2010 Just returned from a trip to Italy. Rome to Venice is about 4 hours via the Eurostar (170 mph), Assisi is about one hour or so from Rome via train. Don't know if there is a train Venice-Assisi, but you can always ask. So, yes, a trip to Assisi is not really something you could do as a day trip. However, that being said, a trip to Assisi would be a very worthwhile, rewarding trip. St. Francis would be happy you visited. P.S. You could visit St. Anthony in Padua, a one hour train trip from Assisi.
ExDean Posted January 30, 2010 #4 Share Posted January 30, 2010 Kathle2036... That's a one hour train ride to Padua from Venice. Sorry about my mental lapse. Either way, enjoy Venice, it's awesome.
bananavan Posted January 30, 2010 #5 Share Posted January 30, 2010 My biggest piece of advice, given from our experience prior to last year's T/A is to find accommodations near the train station in Venice. It is so much easier to take the vapporetto to see St Mark's square than it is to take the vaporetto to get back to the main transportation links. We stayed at the Westin which is lovely but we spent a lot of time standing on the waterbus getting from place to place. We took a one day trip to the Dolomites from Venice. . That was incredible. It was a private tour of six strangers. There are a number of private tours all over Italy. As was suggested by another, check the Italy board.
