debster818 Posted February 2, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 2, 2010 Has anyone rented a car in Grand Caymen, Cozumel, Roatan or Belize?
punkinheads Posted February 2, 2010 #2 Share Posted February 2, 2010 Yes, I have rented a "jeep" in Cozumel but it ended up being a suzuki convertible with engine light on and no top. It was a piece of crap but it was still fun. Enterprise is there. They don't have good cars like we do over here.
5waldos Posted February 2, 2010 #3 Share Posted February 2, 2010 Rented a car in Belize- spend several weeks there and drove all around the country. No problems except that they have big road bumps to slow down the traffic in many areas. Why do you ask?
debster818 Posted February 2, 2010 Author #4 Share Posted February 2, 2010 We are considering renting a vehicle at o ne of the ports.. Probably not Belize though as we want to zipline. What is the approximate cost of rental? Do many people from the cruises do this?
5waldos Posted February 2, 2010 #5 Share Posted February 2, 2010 We weren't cruising so I can't comment on whether many rent when off the ship. And we rented for 2 weeks so the rates would be very different. But many of the standard US companies are in all those places and if you look around you can find coupons and discounts. mrmapt Posted February 2, 2010 #6 Share Posted February 2, 2010 HI I have rented cars in Cozumel and Grand Caymen. Cozumel is great to see the other side of the island, taking your time. Rneted when I got off the ship right atthe dock. Barter with them as there is quite a few rental places. Grand Caymen loved the less travelled side of teh Island loved the local resturants. Made arraingements before I went. They came and picked us up and went to teh airport for the car and they returned us to teh docks when we were done. Very nice lazy day wanderig trip. I hope this helps
golfadj Posted February 2, 2010 #7 Share Posted February 2, 2010 I would caution anyone against rental in Cozumel. In Mexico in the event of an accident no matter who is at fault the driver is subject to criminal penalties. There was an involved thread here last year where the driver and his wife almost missed his ship and cost hundreds of dollars in forced payments to corrupt police.
