momthecruisedirector Posted February 3, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 3, 2010 This vacation is still in the pre-pre-pre planning stages but the plan is to incorporate a Wash DC visit with stops in NYC and Philadelphia, ending in Boston for a cruise by flying into DC and taking the train (or other local transportation to the other cities). So hoping to figure out which train station to go to in Boston where it would make it easiest to get to a hotel near interesting historical areas..... and of course as budget aware as possible! Yeah, I know..... budget aware and vacation don't go too well together, but that's part of the fun of planning (although having an unlimited budget would be so much more fun!!). Any guidance a local can offer would be appreciated!
138east Posted February 3, 2010 #2 Share Posted February 3, 2010 Boston is tough - hotels are as expensive as New York. The folks who get the best deals do it through Priceline or Hotwire. What dates are you looking at for Boston and how many people/beds? Boston is a small city and it's easy to get around on the "T", so as long as you are in the Quincy Market, Downtown, Back Bay, or South Boston areas, you will have easy access to the "interesting historical areas". momthecruisedirector Posted February 3, 2010 Author #3 Share Posted February 3, 2010 Thanks. There will be three adults which I believe makes priceline, etc. a challenge. We are from the other Washington so it's a lot of research. Almost wonder if a few day trips out of dc is a better idea, pre-cruise???? Have to take vac in July this year which makes things a bit pricier.
138east Posted February 3, 2010 #4 Share Posted February 3, 2010 You can do 3 people on Hotwire - you get 2 beds. Just as an example I am seeing a Back Bay 3 1/2* hotel July 15-17 for $129 + tax. This would be either the Hilton or the Sheraton - most probably the Sheraton and it is a good price for Boston. With Hotwire the list of potential hotels can really be narrowed down so you can pretty much know what the choices would be. South Station in Boston is where the trains from NY arrive. The bus station is next door, so that makes it easy.
momthecruisedirector Posted February 3, 2010 Author #5 Share Posted February 3, 2010 I didn't realize that you could do three people. Thank you!
138east Posted February 3, 2010 #6 Share Posted February 3, 2010 You should be able to do well on Hotwire with a hotel in Boston in July as long as it's not July 4th. I think the convention and business traffic drops off in July-August and the colleges are not in full session. There were some really good hotel deals on Hotwire last summer.
