Chowder_17 Posted February 4, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 4, 2010 My husband and I originally had plans to use a CC, but we got our tax refund early and now want to pay in cash. Since this just happened I haven't been paying attention to how you go about doing this? When you check in do you tell them you are using cash and then go to the purser desk once on board? Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the help! You hit it on the head! When you check in at the terminal, tell them you're going to use cash for your S&S, and when you board go to the purser's desk and give them your cash.;)
lcmc Posted February 4, 2010 #3 Share Posted February 4, 2010 Just put your cash in your bank account and use your debit card for S&S. That way you don't have to take all that cash plus get any back if you don't use it all.

Don't want to do that since there will be hold on the card and if we don't spend it all we will get cut a check on the last day.

Thanks for the help! You can also go to http://www.carnival.com/BonVoyage/AddToCart.aspx?cat=giftcertificates&pid=FSD&cid=CC_Footer_66 and pre-pay your OBC. I did this and it really eased our minds knowing things are already taken care of. Of course, if we decide to, we can always go over the initial amount we pre-paid, but at least we have a budget in mind and will try to keep to it. That's a good idea, but as you can see I'm two days away from leaving, so I think its too late to do that. And you would still have to take them to the desk, right? How crowded is it going to be once we get on board?
Golden Tee Posted February 5, 2010 #7 Share Posted February 5, 2010 I thought I read somewhere that you can tell them at check-in you're using cash and you have 24 hrs to get to the pursers desk to deposit it. You're able to make purchases in the meantime.
tamirpr Posted February 5, 2010 #8 Share Posted February 5, 2010 We had a similar situation on our cruise last week. We just kept it on the credit card through check-in. Periodically during the cruise we went the the purser's desk (when there was no line ;)) and would give them $200 or whatever in cash. At the end we owed maybe $20 on our CC because I bought a picture after we paid cash. But no way was I standing in that ferocious line on the last night. I would NOT use your debit card. They put significant holds on any card and they sometimes can last a week.

You're able to make purchases in the meantime. Is this really true? I'd love to know, because we always head straight to the purser's to deposit cash. I'd much rather head to the deck, grab a DOD and relax! Then go to the purser's desk later.
Rare chasinraynbowz Posted February 5, 2010 #10 Share Posted February 5, 2010 Last cruise, we were in group 1 and virtually had NO wait for the Purser. It was quick and painless and we were out on the Lido having lunch within minutes of boarding. Closing our account the last night was the same way. Since we don't drink and we had bought all we were going to buy, the Pursers desk was not crowded at all right before dinner so I ran over and closed our account. OhioJeff Posted February 5, 2010 #12 Share Posted February 5, 2010 A bit confused..you have to close the account when using cash? If you have money left over, you have to close your account to get it back. While, I use a credit card, I normally close out my account with cash the last evening around 12 or 1am, if I had a nice run in the casino. Also, not sure about Tampa, but Miami has a dedicated line at check-in for those making cash deposits.

I'd much rather head to the deck, grab a DOD and relax! Then go to the purser's desk later. We've headed straight to Lido the last 3 cruises and had no problem charging without any cash or card on the account. I was told we can make three purchases before putting anything on the S&S. Since the shops aren't open then, it's pretty much just pop and alcohol. As for closing the account, we've never done that when using cash. The last two years we've had a nice letter asking us to stop at the Pursers desk in the morning to settle our account. I think I owed $37 two years ago and $6 last year. jason534 Posted February 5, 2010 #15 Share Posted February 5, 2010 Almost forgot, if you have money left from your cash deposit, they will attach a check to your final statement the last morning.
2bfirsttime Posted February 5, 2010 #16 Share Posted February 5, 2010 We are buying fun ship dollars, those will be on our account... Should we skip giving our debit card information so there will not be a hold on our card? How much normally are the holds?
Soon2BCrusin Posted February 5, 2010 #17 Share Posted February 5, 2010 We are buying fun ship dollars, those will be on our account... Should we skip giving our debit card information so there will not be a hold on our card? How much normally are the holds? The initial hold per carnival is 50$ on a debit card. I like the idea of fun dollars... can I make the deposit onto my S&S before arriving with them? Because if not, might as well just take the cash with me (I was planning on using my debit card as well (from an account not linked to my main bank), but I'm going to have my taxes back and my buddies 1/2 of the cruise cost back long before my cruise (which is where all of my S&S is coming from). I like to have things done early, and since I'm a newbie cruiser, it'd be nice to have to do nothing but show up on embarkation day for my friends wedding, and then move on to the cruise without anything else going on... 2bfirsttime Posted February 5, 2010 #18 Share Posted February 5, 2010 $50pp hold is not that bad, I was freaking out for a minute thinking something like a few hundred pp. I am praying that we have enough paid ahead that we wont have a bill at the end anyway. I believe it's just 50$ per card... I'd have to look @ their site again... but I don't know what increments they put additional holds on. But if I can use cash, it'd be easier IMHO... And for those people who have a fear of the holds not being released, it's up to their financial institution, not the cruise line.

You're able to make purchases in the meantime. This is true== but many people think as soon as they board they have toplace that money at that time so they can buy that first drink. You board--look at the line at the pursers desk-- the head to the lido deck, yes you can use your card for a drink. You will have to visitthe pursers desk sometimes within that 24 hours and place that cash. We head to the pursers desk to place our funship dollars sometimesafter dinner that first night
