Land excursions from San Jose, Costa Rica after sailing on Windstar?

Hello,

We are going on the Costa Rica Windstar cruise on Dec 26, 2010. It wil be the New Year holiday cruise. We are excited to spend New Year's Eve at sea.

We are thinking of trying to see other parts of Costa Rica after our sailing. My questions are:

1) Would San Jose serve as a good home base for exploring attractions in the outlying areas?

2) If not, what would be a good travel plan for 3-4 days after the cruise ends?

3) What attractions in Costa Rica are a "must see"?

Thank you for responding!

We've done the New Year's Eve Costa Rican cruise three times. It's our favorite Windstar cruise. San Jose may not be the best home base for everything. If you have a few days you probably want to go to Arenal. While we haven't stayed there others have enjoyed seeing the volcano at night and there are many things to see in that area. It is about 2 hours from San Jose. The cruise is on the West Coast - mostly cloud forest - so you might want to see more of the rain forest either inland or on the Eastern side. But whatever you see, it is an incrdible country and the nature and surroundings are incredible.
