Port of Miami and checked liquor and wine

Recommended Posts

If they give you the booze back on the last night of the cruise, can you keep it for the second week of a back to back?

We have always done that...buy some the first week and drink it the second week...:)..Dennis

This X-ray machine can detect what you have in your suitcases.

http://onthescene.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/01/11/new-airport-x-ray-could-zap-3-1-1/

Or at least can tell whether you are bringing water or an explosive. And the single one they have made is going to -what? Dubai? That is not Carnival. It will be years before they would be available and I for one would rather have them aimed at determining if someone is trying to smuggle explosives onto a plane.

Just off the Imagination on 02/05 out of Miami. We had a letter from CCL staff stating that our luggage contained what may have been unauthorized items. We had four bottles of water in our checked bags. The letter stated that the articles in question were looked at and deemed authorized.

I can see it now;

"Hey Bob, there is liquid in this suitcase... what do you think it is? Looks like water, or Vodka? Bob, smell it... no you smell it... (back and forth) Okay Ill smell it, smells like nothing,... taste it...no you taste it... (back and forth) I smelled it, you taste it, fine, {sip} can't tell... Let me try... {sip, sip, sip} still can't tell, Hey Joe, taste this... {Gulp Gulp Gulp} its water.

Okay, put the cap back on and put it back,

a few minutes later, Bob, I think we should have used a cup when we tasted that, (Bob) next time we will use a cup.

X-ray machine that can tell colors, that is very funny. Some people will believe anything that anyone tells them.

X-ray machines differentiate density. The displays are in shades of gray with some scanners using adjusted computer generated colors to show different densities. The color spectrum is selected by the operator or programer of the system. If this option is selected the shades or colors displayed have nothing to do with what the object actually is. That is where an experienced operator comes in to play. (22 years as a Navy radar operator/analyst and tech)

You people are spoiling all the fun. And here I figured that these new fangled xray machines would be able to determine whether it was 80 or 150 proof vodka! I think I shall just ignore your facts- I don't like them a lot. In my heart I know that these machines can do it.

NO, no, no. They have hired rehabilited ex-booze smugglers to test every suspicious bottle.

I am thinking alot of people will need to start bringing the clear strong "witch hazel" that they like to use after shaving, and the new light brown color Rum flavored "mouth wash"

I will have a strange thing that I will need to use the largest container I can buy at Walmart.

How about a large Bay Rum? Do they still make that? Mmm- smells rather nice.

would they take away an open bottle of mouthwash? Technically its an open container of liquid. Do I need to buy all fresh and open it on the ship?? I know its a ridiculas question, but these rules are getting a little ridiculas. I understand not having liquids on a 3-hour plane ride, but this is a week long trip! we like to bring bottled water because the ship charges too much, but now i dont know what to do with it- check it or carry it? Carnival says carry it and someone else said they had to throw out an unopened bottle. I am so confused!! Cruising out of miami in less then two weeks and I will be upset if they tell me I can bring my water and then they make me dump it- and my ginger ale for that matter. Never know if i will need that or not so I bring some just in case... so frustrating~!!

Nobody has said that the x-ray machine can tell colors........what has been said is the display is in color. The color represents organic/inorganic based on its feedback from the x-rays. The denser the object the darker the color that is displayed.

The days of black and white are long gone even though the keypad does allow you the ability to select a B/W image or the ability to inverse the image.

I don't smuggle liquor, but neither do I give a rat's a$$ what total strangers pack in their suitcases! WHY do others care about what people they don't know bring onboard?! Someone please explain!

Ok- because not everyone is bringing booze. I care because I was booked on the Pan Am flight that blew up over Lockerbie. And it is especially those I don't know who I most care about.

Well- this comes pretty close:

J New scanning devices in Mia pick up liquor in bags and even distinguish between water. vodka and gin. Different colors for each liquid. The last night when it was delivered to our room, the amount they were delivering was astounding!! It almost ruins the fun of cruising..

I'm specifically talking about the posters who are all over people for smuggling booze and those that are rejoicing that they are confiscating passengers' alcohol.

That is what I said. There are 4 post where people are taking as gospel the new machines can tell the difference between different kinds of booze based on the color of the booze. Total crap. If the technology does exist for that I don't think that the cruise lines would be getting it before the TSA for use at airports.

Ok, here's my info to share. I cruised out of Miami last spring break. Our first stop was San Juan. The DSIL and I went into a liquor store that was right before the entrance to the ship. We bought a bottle of booze and a six-pack of Pepsi. It was put into generic plastic bags, the same kind you get at any supermarket. We walked onto the ship and put the bags on the x-ray machine. No one said anything to us. We did not try to hide it, we just decided that we'd take a chance. If they kept it fine, if we got away with it good for us. No one said a peep! We just collected our bags and went our merry way!:D The DSIL and I are not spring breakers if you get my drift. We wore love beads and went to the original Woodstock!:D

You've just been taken out of context. In context, I basically agree unless those smuggling are being moralistic about other issues. In which case it is a hypocritical.

That is one of the great things about living in the US of A we can flip flop on opinions and issues when ever we want. If that doesn't work we can say we are going to rehab. (works for the politians and movie/sports stars) It never pays to take life to seriously.:D

I've enjoyed your expertise on this subject. It was obvious you know what you are saying.

Don't expect the hard-core to believe it,though. They truly believe they are more clever than others when it comes to the practice of bringing booze on board a ship.

They won't pay any attention to anything you say at all.

But, the rest of us will....

Thanks.,

No they don't stock all the liquors that I like. Their scotch collection SUCKS. Even on the boat as a whole it sucks.

Being a picky scotch drinker myself, on the rocks please,I can sympathize.

On a cruise, I find something else to like.

I refuse to pay the price for premium scotch on board, I wouldn't smuggle-- so, for a week, I'll live with a gin and tonic or campari and soda a couple times a day.

Back in 2006, there were tons of smuggling threads about folks putting it in mouthwash bottles believe it or not .... folks are just perfecting smuggling to a art. Im glad we dont have to drink it out of mouthwash bottles any more. lol uck.

Seriously though, where do they find the time to go through everyone’s luggage that is suspected of having alcohol in it? Its bad enough that you have to wait sometimes until after dinner to get your checked bags, but imagine how many bags they would have to search to catch all the alcohol people try to smuggle? 3000 passengers with one or more bags each? It just doesn’t make sense to me. If they really are going to implement this new procedure we will be lucky if we get our bags by the next day!

I for one will be really bummed if this is a serious change. We will have to start looking into all inclusive’s again because there is no way I am paying $30 dollars for a bottle of wine that I can get at home for $8! We could always go back to smuggling in the Listerine bottles!

I agree with most people, we also end up spending ALOT of money at the bar and the casino on our cruises, on top of what we smuggle. Most of the time we don’t even finish what we smuggle on anyway. It is just for the convenience of having a cocktail while getting ready for the evening, or to enjoy on our balcony!

They don't "go through everyones luggage"... Luggage is SCANNED - a lot like the procedure at an airport where thousands of pieces a day are checked.

If they suspect contraband, the bag is set aside....eventually, they will call you out and check your bag. This process doesn't delay sailing. It can, however, delay you getting your luggage if you have something in it.

You may not lock it if you are checking it.

We will carry on all of our luggage..it can be zip tied locked. If they want to go throught it. We will be there. I won't need to be called somewhere.

All the pop, water and the wine will be in a different bag....not my carry one from the plane.

Not too bad. All my luggage is on wheels and my carry on piece slides onto my bigger one. I will have the liquids(pop, wine and water) in a beach bag over my shoulder. Did it that way last time. Worked fine :)

Darlene

Better check their website. Carryon luggage has size limits......if it's too big, you'll be required to take it back out to be checked in with the rest.

They are tougher right now because of spring break and this is the beniging of the breaks I belive...

They wouldn't be going through this new procedure just because of spring break.

Now that the smugglers on cruise forums have posted every possible way to bring on their booze and have provided pictures of what they got away with....they are cracking down....and,it's about time.

Perhaps it will also eliminate the boozers who fall overboard....a problem on Carnival....
