davecttr Posted February 9, 2010 #2 Share Posted February 9, 2010 The Spirit is usually not used in the winter season and is mothballed somewhere until the next spring. It would be a good time to make any changes required. Destiny, Celebration and Spirit are all coming to the end of their charters and it may be that Thomsons would prefer to replace them with newer ships. There are reports that the new Dream will have £5 million spent on her this autumn and the Escape £4 million but these are tiny sums compared with what other cruise lines spend on refits. Having cruised on both Spirit and Celebration I reckon what is needed is 1. fix the vibration/wobble although apparently this is not possible plus lots of cruisers don't notice it or are not bothered by it. 2. Refurbish the bathrooms with new equipment, shower walls etc. 3. upgrade the plumbing, apparently they have to make their own spares aboard as they are no longer manufactured. 4. good quality mattresses and soft furnishings. Spend £20 million and the ship would be good for another 25 years!.
Cruiserhel Posted February 9, 2010 Author #3 Share Posted February 9, 2010 i agree, however this would most likely cause price increases also and none of these things seem to affect the enjoyment of the holiday. we have been back off the Celebration for 3 weeks and the rumours from staff are that the Destiny is coming to an end shortly but the Celebration has recently been refurbished and that the Spirit is likely to be refurbished in time for the summer season
davecttr Posted February 9, 2010 #4 Share Posted February 9, 2010 I am booked on the destiny for next January so she should be doing the winter season and then perhaps it's bye bye?
Cruiserhel Posted February 9, 2010 Author #5 Share Posted February 9, 2010 yeah possibly could be until the dream get established etc because i notice for the next year or so the Destiny and the dream are doing similar itineries. so looks like the Celebration and Spirit may be around for another few years if they are spending some cash on them
Ov3rride Posted February 9, 2010 #6 Share Posted February 9, 2010 I believe the spirit is laid up in Limassol over winter as the calypso used to be. Something about cheaper rates so i heard. Nothing is to be believed though, except about the calypso as that was true.
