Military Discount Code?

Ok fellow CC'ers I have a good friend at work that is asking me to help research cruises for her and her family. Her husband is retired Military and they have 4 boys, so they will need adjoining cabins.

How do you get the military discount? Is there a code you put in? Or is it just a general percentage of total cost?

Any help you can give me would be helpful.

I did a search and came up blank, and called a cruise specialist at Carnival and she has no idea how to do it online, she can do it when she books, but can't give me any other info.

Please help!!!

Cheers, Carole

It's my belief that CCL doesn't have a code for this. You have to call CCL or your TA to see if a certain cruise has a military discount available.

This is one of the area's that RCCI has a foot up as you can check military on their site and if it's available it shows you

Is the military code a certain percentage then? Not really available for all cruises I understand, but truthfully I just want to give her the info so when they book they will know to ask, and give them an idea of how much of a discount they can look forward to??? Any clue the ballpark percentage?

Thanks!!! Carole

You can't view Military rates on carnival.com and the Military Fare code won't help you. You CAN Google the several TA On-Line sites that display the Military Rates. These are not a fixed %, are not available on all sailings, or necessarily for all Cabin Categoriews on any given sailing.

You may have a problem booking two (family) cabins - generally Military member must be in the booked cabin. In November or so Carnival usually offers Military Friends and Family where Military can book up to 3 Cabins.

See http://www.bookccl.com/salestools/FunFaxes/Special%20Programs/T1PM1.pdf for current Military offerings.

When you book, you'll have to provide the requested documentation (DD-214 with Honorable discharge indicated, for retired) w/in 48 hours, else they may cancel the booking or change it to regular Fare.

Its like all the other rates, supply and demand. Look at senior rate, its similar, its how much they feel like giving off. Im not aware of any rates that are a flat percentage off .. ever.

There are some TA sites where you can click on military discounts and bring up the pricing for military. You cant do this on the Carnival site for some reason, but you can see it on TA sites. (which of course cant be named here)

PS often lately Early Saver rates are cheaper than military, so have them look at ES rates and get a idea, ... if military is even offered for that cruise, the lowest it might be. Once in a while its lower, but doesnt sound like often lately.

Most people are booking ES. If military goes lower, then put in for it. ... remember booking military, once you hit final payment you dont get any rate reductions. (in addition to perhapsy paying a higher than ES price)

In case I wasnt clear, booking ES then changing to military, you are still ES so you still get lower prices up to 2 days... so its smarter to book ES then change to military if it goes cheaper than ES.

It is not a set percentage. There are websites you can go to that have a list of military rate sailings that are available. We are not allowed to give those sites on here. Do a search on Google for "cruise vacations carnival military rate" (without the quotes) or something similar. I am sure you can find it that way.

I have not seem many Military Rates lately since the introduction of the ES rate. They are there but few and far between but like others said there are some online cruise websites that list them.

When I booked through Carnival on the Military Rate I would check a certain site regularly and 98% of the time the price would go down over a six month time frame and I would get the price adjustment.

Someone here said it could not be done but it has worked for me on over 5 cruises:)

From what I've heard, not ALL cruises have a military discount. Correct me if I'm wrong :D

I checked out USAA, they go through a TA.... I got a better deal as past guest booking directly through Carnival.

Have you tried looking at USAA? The cruises there were discounted, but you paid a higher upfront or deposit fee.

The early saver rate I got was significantly lower than the USAA rate...additionally, the price went down another $100/pp after booking...and I got that back in the form of OBC...

Wow, my brother, who's retired Army, swears by them. I bet he doesn't know he could get a better rate somewhere else. I'll have to tell him. Thanks.

I agree with your brother. I use USAA for just about anything they offer because their prices and service beats just about everyone out there. However, you can do better than their travel partner for cruises. I did save $300 on a rental car with them...and used them for Travel Insurance...:)...both for the cruise I did NOT book with them...

I've used military rate for a lot of cruises, but lately the ES rate is actually lower than the military,,when it's offered. As noted above, the military rate isn't offered on all sailings. Just booked "Legend" for the fall, and once again, ES was lower than military, senior, or repeat offender rates.

Because the military rate requires verification documents, it cannot be booked on line. When a T/A advertises it, they are responsible to see that you send your documentation in, or the fare will be withdrawn.

Only one cruise for us was cheaper with Military discount. Also it was only good for one cabin. Only during the Veterans day thing they did were we eligible to use it for family and friends that booked with us.

We also had to fax our DD-214 about 20 times before they claimed they got it. I blame a bad PVP for that though since it was faxed to her attention. Same PVP booked me with a birthdate of 1998............I had to then fax proof over and over that I was not a child! (Yes we have a new PVP since then)

Good luck and Happy Cruising!!

Go into VTG and check what is out there in military, lately ES and over 55 have more cruises with a good discount if you can go whenever. I have found better prices for balcony with state discount and ES in the last year. That program will bring the best price up for you whatever it is. Other then that its a pain to find all the different prices.

Military rate is hit and miss. I have used it on most of my cruises, but lately other rates have been better.

I used the ES for my recent New Years cruise, and just booked a cruise in May, for which I got a better rate for being a repeat cruiser.

Just have to do your homework.

OUr PVP keeps us up to date on military rate. If they can wait a few months, tell them to book during May. Often during May (around Memorial day) and November (around veterans day), Military rates can be applied to up to three cabins. Otherwise. It would only apply to the cabin he is in..

only once has military been the lowest rate for us. When you search on other sites for all applicable rates, very often past guest or especially resident rates are lower.

You do have to call a PVP directly to book if you are not working with a TA. you cannot book directly with carnival online if you want to use the military rate.

It is nice to have the options though.

Once you send your DD-214, it is then linked to your Past Guest #, and there is no need to send in each time.
