We were on the 3/13 sailing of POA. The dress code in the main dining room is resort casual. You did see some shorts in the main dining room, but not too often, shorts at the buffet on Deck 11 were very common. We did not visit any of the other dining rooms, but did see that the dress code there was more dressy than the maining dining rooms. You did see people dressed to the 9's but they where also getting their portrait done too.

Hawaii is a casual place, and the ship followed that. Forget about packing suits or tux or cocktail dresses unless you want a formal photo.

We were on POA for Thanksgiving 2008. Overall, it's very casual attire. We did dress up one night b/c we were getting Christmas Portraits taken. Other than that--it was quite casual. We ate in all the restaurants and I typically would wear a nice sundress or polo with capri slacks/ DH would wear khakis and a polo shirt. I would say everything goes except for tank tops and short shorts.

Hope you have fun--we are going back again this Thanksgiving! We had a great time in 08 and you hope you do to!!!!!!!!

what is the dress code on the POA. We are seasoned cruisers but have never cruised NCL before. we are booked on the POA in Hawaii. thanks!

Directly from the POA Dailies from last month:

"For dinner, collared shirts and a pair of khakis for me, and skirts or sundresses for the ladies. Nice jeans are cool in all restaurants, except the Liberty, but please no shorts or athletic wear in Liberty or Jefferson's Bistro. Kids under 12 - nice shorts or jeans are okay. The Cadillac Diner and Aloha Cafe both offer a casual atmosphere."

We are on the 11/27 sailing! Are you on that one or the one before? If you're on our sailing, please check out our roll call (link in my signature).

I've read so many threads on these boards about what is okay to wear in the MDRs that I am thoroughly

I don't want to know what was posted in dailies (no slam to the poster that offered it) because they really don't reflect what people actually wear to dinner. I'm more interested in hearing from people that have been on a recent POA cruise (as on another thread a poster said that NCL has changed its rules and "nice" shorts and jeans are now allowed in the MDRs. So, I'm looking to hear from a very recent POA passenger as to "yes" or "no" were passengers allowed into the MDRs, both the Liberty and the Skyline, with nice shorts and jeans. My DS is 14 and lives in nice shorts and jeans.:D Thanks everyone!

sailed the POA I can tell you I was comfortable in my sun dresses and I had a dressy dress for Jeffersons! My step-son was required (my rules) to wear nice pants, shirt and shoes for dinner and my husband usually wore a sport coat (he is more comfortable)...didn't see any real formal dresses but with such a port intensive cruise the dining rooms were never really full. With overnight at most ports a lot of people ate ashore!

Thank you so much llachance!:D Just curious, did you by any chance see teens and men wearing shorts in the MDRs. At this point, since we leave in 3 days, I am going to take 3 pr. of nice jeans and one pr. of dress pants for the DS. If they allow him to wear shorts fine, if not he can wear the jeans and on DUON night he can wear the dress pants. He'll wear collared polo shirts to dinner and his nice t-shirts all other times. I think we'll do fine. I don't force him to dress up except when it is necessary. At this age the one thing they don' want is to be different from the other kids, that's why I asked if you saw other teens or men wearing nice short in the MDRs.

nice jeans are fine. Hawaiian shirts are the norm on the islands, coats and ties the exception, and the ship is no different. My step son usually only wears sweats so I needed him to understand there are different standards when you go out to dinner!

The POA main dining room is actually two dining rooms! The upper is called Liberty and the lower is the Skyline. I think the confusion is that there are two dining dress codes for each one. The Skyline is more casual where you can wear shorts or jeans, but not so in the upper MDR (Liberty). From what I observed, they actually enforce the dress codes. I usually ate in the Liberty since it seemed to be quieter. Both dining rooms are very nice with the exact same foods being served.

Thanks everyone for your help. We are trying to learn all we can about NCL. I am finding that the people on the NCL board are very kind and helpful. As I said at the beginning of this thread....we are seasoned cruisers and have never cruised NCL. So I am really enjoying learning all about the line. Thank you again for your responses.

You say you've never cruised NCL? NCL introduced "Freestyle Cruising" and it is very different than a traditional type cruise. I like all styles, Traditional, Choice, My Time Dining and Freestyle.

BUT.............. As you have never cruised with NCL before, PLEASE do not gauge your first NCL Cruise on your NCL America Cruise to the Hawaiian Islands. Totally different experience.

First off: No other Cruise Line gives you as much time on the Islands than NCL. Almost 100 hours in one week. It's awesome!

BUT, and this IS a BUT...... the service you get on this cruise will be wonderful as long as you KNOW what to expect (or NOT to expect.)

#1 - NCL has a great Casino Program. Although, there is NO Casino on this ship. So you will not get to experience it.

#2 - NCL Pride of America is an American Staffed ship. Understand, you will NOT get the type of service that NCL offers on thier other ships. Unfortunetly, it seems the American work ethics are very different. Hate to say it but it's true. You will not get, IMO, the type of service you have come to expect on any cruise line.

As long as you KNOW this..... you'll have an awesome cruise visiting more of the Hawaiian Islands! You will get good service, but American style.

Aloha!

I am thinking I will not have to take a jacket at all for this cruise... even for the nicest restaurant. Is this the consensus among most people, on POA?

Right, you won't need a jacket for any POA cruise unless you want to wear one. Some men wear them but most of them don't. I was asking about shorts for my DS who's 14. My DH will wear his nice jean or docker-type pants with nice shirts.
