bzv143 Posted January 27, 2005 #1 Share Posted January 27, 2005 For the cruise on Island Princess from LA to Hawaii, which side gets a better all- around view, the cabins on the port side, or starboard side? Help me book, please! Thanks!!! :p
suzyluvs2cruise Posted January 27, 2005 #2 Share Posted January 27, 2005 Also wondering about cruising by the Volcano on the Big Island. Is this done in the am or at night? Which side is better - port or starboard?
cruisingfreak Posted January 27, 2005 #3 Share Posted January 27, 2005 For the Kilauea Volcano scenic cruising, be on the starboard side. It's done at nite. Minette
happy aries Posted January 28, 2005 #4 Share Posted January 28, 2005 We were on the port side and got to see all the docks, and wheh we had to be tendered we saw the coastlines of Kona and Lahaina. The skies were too overcast for us to see the volcano in action.
bluegrasshopper Posted January 28, 2005 #5 Share Posted January 28, 2005 we were also port side and enjoyed looking over the docks we stayed in c334 and our balcony was a double wide half covered. I mention this because the other concern on this cruise is amount of wind that will be blowing on you if you have a balcony. By booking port side we had a lot less wind on our side of the ship on the way to Hawaii. It seemed about the same on both sides on the return trip. We missed a bit of scenery but really enjoyed our balcony. It is true that the starboard side will pass by the volcano in our case at about 10:00 pm but we went out to deck seven and watched comfortably from there. Unfortunately it was raining so we only saw a few glimpses of red glow. This is too short of a period of time to make it your only consideration. I personally thought port was the best choice (silly things like we got great pictures of our cabin from shore and when we arrived in LA we knew how long of an immigration line we were in for :) If you are not in a big hurry to get off the ship you can look out your balcony and wait for the crowds to die down a bit. But I have never read any extensive postings from anyone that was starboard so I am not sure what we missed.
star gazer Posted January 28, 2005 #6 Share Posted January 28, 2005 The aft starboard side is in front of the Aloha Tower and a fun place to enjoy your balcony. Also, the starboard gives a good view of the lava flow. I consider those two places to be among the highlights of the cruise.
bzv143 Posted January 28, 2005 Author #7 Share Posted January 28, 2005 Help!!! You all confused me more... almost looks like I need to book one cabin port and one starboard! YIKES... any other info that may sway me? Does Starboard get to see ANY ports? Will Starboard miss the lei dancers on the docks? Is Starboard windier?
andreadan Posted January 29, 2005 #8 Share Posted January 29, 2005 . . . having been on a RCCL Hawaii cruise in October, 2004. We cruised by the lavi flow about 9 p.m. at night but barely saw bright red spots visible on a clear night. Andrea
