Southampton grocery store

We will be staying at the De Vere prior to a cruise in July. Where is the nearest grocery store and what are the hours? I know there is a West Quay. Is there a grocery store there? Thanks. Marlyne

We'll be shopping for Wine, Pimm's and R White's Lemonade. Had thought to have our driver stop on the way to our Southampton hotel from LHR.

Better still would be someplace walkable from our hotel (Jury's Inn). Is there a off license or supermarket near there?

1. Nearest off-licence is in Bedford Place, a 5 min walk from Jury's Inn.

2. Majestic Wines is a wine supermarket in West Quay Road, same road as the De Vere Grand Harbour. Wide range of wines, comparatively poor selection of beers & spirits.

3. Nearest pukka supermarket is the ASDA (part of Walmart) quoted by the elk, in Portland Terrace, more-or-less backs on to the coach station.

4. Lots of little shops in St Mary's Road, but that area is a little rough.

5. There'll be a few drinks outlets in the city centre, a 10 min walk.

6.. If you want your driver to stop on the way, there's a large TESCO supermarket at Winnall, on the edge of Winchester, a few seconds off your route. Take the ramp off the M3 motorway at junction 9, take the 3rd exit off the roundabout over the motorway, and in 100 yards at the next roundabout TESCO is the first exit.

We will be arriving by National Express the morning of our cruise. Does the ASDA store sell wine? Is is within easy walking distance of the coach station? Is there a closer store, selling wine, to the coach station? Thinking about one of us staying with the luggage, while one of us buys wine, before catching the taxi to the pier.

Yes asda sell a wide selection of very reasonable priced wines.also some cheap wines as well ,its very walkable and its worth doing as most stand alone stores can not compete,it would take you approx 30 min to go there and back inc purchases :):):)

Yep, easy-peasy, that's exactly the way to do it.

If you've got google earth, you can see the coach station in the spur of Harbour Parade, there's a coach just going in. ASDA is the odd-shaped building to the right, fronting Portland Terrace. Ignore the steep path to Portland Terrace, there's a customer's rear entrance, with a lift, literally one minute from the coach station.

How much luggage will you have?

If you've got one case each, you could do what my lazy boyfriend did when he was on holiday in France last year & put the cases in a trolley each, wonder round the shop and then take a cab to the hotel from there.

Is it easy from the train station to walk there or should I have the taxi stop on the way to the port?

Asda is around a 5 min walk (uphill) from the train station, or there's a free bus which goes that way quite regularly. I'd advise not getting a taxi driver to stop as you could be a good few minutes deciding what to get and queuing. It's probably easier to then get a taxi to the ship from asda.

You can avoid the steep hill. Left out of the station, but instead of going up the hill take a right at the lights, then when you get to the coach station (on your right) the back of the Asda store is on the opposite corner (on your left). Walk along the back of the Asda store to the rear customer entrance, with a lift up to the shop-floor. As No. 88 says its a five min walk, but on level ground.

Then taxi from the coach station.

But with luggage I'd be inclined to get a taxi from the rail station & have the driver wait at Asda.
