Viareggio and Lucca?

Well, it can certainly be done time-wise, but you'd be shortchanging both.

Viareggio is a beach town ... is your reason for heading there to get some beach time? (That would impact my suggestion re how to order the day)

Just for planning purposes, you can assume train times as follows:

Between Livorno Centrale and Viareggio: half hour

Between Viareggio and Lucca: half hour

Between Livorno Centrale and Lucca: one hour

You can see a great deal of Lucca in one day, but you won't be able to do it all. It's completely flat, and so is easy to do on foot.

You enter through the walls just across from the train station. If it's a nice day and not too hot, it's fun to rent bicycles and ride along the top of the walls.

I'd like to do this and add Pisa. I'm guessing if you thought both in a day was shortchanging them, then adding Pisa would be over the top, but, isn't Pisa on the way back from either Lucca or Viareggio to Livorno? My thought would be like the OP to do it by train. I was thinking Pisa last since if it gets late we could skip it. Is that correct from the standpoint that Pisa's on the way back?

Thanks.
