Cave-tubing!!

 

or if you'd prefer a longer excursion, the Mayan Ruins excursions to Altun Ha or Tunantunich are unique in the sense that they go deep inland and you can climb around on the ruins, something not allowed on larger Mayan site in Mexico. But use a ship excursion just to ensure you won't miss the ship.

"Captain your own boat" This is a tour thru Coral Breeze. Take a small outboard boat up the Wallace river and through the Mangroves.

I second the cavetubing. This is one of a few places where it can be done. Definately "THE" thing to do in Belize.

 

THe Captain Your Own Boat would be fun but I captain my boats at home, so it isn't anything new.

The cave tubing is unique to Belize, and is a real good time. I still wear my "I survived cave-tubing in Belize" tee shirt!

Just returned from Belize - enjoyed a visit to Caye Caulker after snorkeling and petting the stingrays. Very unique community, but definitely laid back, so don't go if you want a lot of excitement. Cool to walk around barefoot and do a little sourvenier shopping.

 

Next time to Belize, we are cave tubing with the kids though :D.

:)I want to do something different in Belize. I have 3 Snorkel trips planned on other Islands. Don,y want Tubing, ruins, or water activities. 2 years ago we spent the day on Isla Mujeres. We rented a golf cart for the day. WE drove the entire island, checked out the local cemetery, lunch at Jax, local shopping and just cruising . We had a great time. Anything like that out there.

You can take the water taxi and go to Caye Caulker on your own. As stated, it is very laid back but a beautiful island to explore.

The "cab service" in Caye Caulker is the golf cart. You can book thru Coral Breezes or catch a water taxi on your own, you just need to be careful when getting the water taxis, that you return in time and don't miss the last one. I liked that Coral Breezes watched the clock for us, as local time is different than ship time. Have fun!

You are probably not going to see a lot from the beach at Caye Caulker; I swam a little while waiting for our boat to leave - mostly sand and sea grass.

We spent two weeks in Belize at the beginning of 2008, and we were exhausted (I lost twelve pounds in two weeks). "Exclusive" items include 1). Maya ruins, including Altun Ha (easiest and closest to port), Lamanai (most beautiful in many ways) and Xunantunich (most spectacular of the three) (if they are offered at all to cruiseship passengers anymore). All of these sites are VERY substantial and worth a visit. 2). Snorkeling the reef OFF Caye Caulker--Caye Caulker itself is not a terrifically compelling tourist destination, although the pizza is good in places. The REEF is about a quarter mile to the east, and is very rich and beautiful (so far)--but legally you cannot go there unescorted by a guide. Nor would you want to, for a number of reasons. 3). Cave tubing, which is both fun and full of gorgeous scenery--but it did require about a half-hour of hiking, some of it a little strenuous. And people have occasionally drowned, although this is not to be expected.

Everything "exclusive" in Belize is from 30 to 60 miles from where your ship docks, so you have to choose one and devote your day to it. Because of very real time constraints having to do with traffic and navigation I would encourage most people to consider carefully the tours offered from YOUR ship--these are contracted as always with local tour providers, but I think it is true that the cruise lines are more sensitive to the shore excursions they have sponsored than to those with which they may have no economic ties. In fact, however, every provider of tours knows that the bottom line is to get you back safely aboard your ship in a timely manner, so your risk factor is low.

Agree with welldone60 that "Captain Your Own Boat" is a great excursion. The first part is very picturesque and relaxing going through the jungle. On the way back (tide was in so it was much deeper going through the jungle) we opened it up and ripped through the jungle swaying from side to side - very "James Bond"y.

 

We have also done cave tubing with the kids which was also great, but Captain Your Own Boat was the best excursion we have ever done.

For those of you have done the cave tubing, how strict are they on the children's minimum age? My youngest will be 7 and the "rules" say the minimum age is 8. How dangerous is the tubing? I'm kinda feeling stuck with a lot of the fun excursion because the minimum age is always 8. Starting to think we should cancel the cruise and rebook for a year later!
