Corfu car rental & driving maps

Hello again. Will be in Corfu May 22nd (shoulder season?) and would like to rent a car for the day. Open to either an automatic or a stick (husband can drive a manual). I noticed on the boards that most people say a manual costs about $50/day, about $10 more for an automatic. Is that still the case? Does that include extras like insurance and any vehicle fees? Is the rental typical where you have to return it with the same amount of gas that was originally in the car upon renting it? Is there a gas station near the port? Most importantly, would it be best if I book in advance or just wait until we arrive at the port and wing it from there? Just want to make sure a car will be available and that I won't get charged a higher rate for booking on the spot...

Also, does anyone have a good, detailed driving map of Corfu?

One more thing, does anyone have suggestions on where to start (which direction to head) or a general schedule of sights to see/things to do in Corfu? I have some ideas like visiting the Byzantine Church of St. Spyridon, Paleo beach & the grotto tours, the Old Fort & Old Towb, etc. but I'm not sure how to plan the day...

Thanks in advance!

There are several local rental dealers that rent cars right at the port (in and just outside the terminal building). A free shuttle will take you from your ship to the terminal building, which is also right at the port entrance. We enjoy driving the part of the island that is north or Corfu Town and will often work away around that entire part of the island. We usually head over to the western coast, then up to the north and finally work are way around to the east side of the island where we then head south along the coast back to Corfu Town. The rental car dealers will all give you an island map and suggestions...although we used our own GPS. You are expected to replace the gas, but there are a few gas stations not too far from the port (we use one that is a couple of miles north.

While driving on Corfu watch out for the "one lane" roads that have a stop light at the top and bottom to regulate who has the right of way. If you head up the hill against the red light, you will be forced to back down the hill.

There is corfusunrise.com, they are located at the port exactly opposite the cruises arrival spot and they are specialist in car rental for cruises in corfu. Glyfada and Ag. Gordios l think there are the best 2 beaches in corfu. Also

the view point in Pelekas is worth it.

:) :)
