VIGO, SPAIN...any suggestions?

Vigo was the last port visited on our Med cruise last year and to be honest I struggled to find anything of major interest near the port especially after having visited the major cities of the Mediterranean.

However we did walk off the ship and wandered round the city centre and treated it as a shopping type trip

If your ship is in port all day, don't miss the opportunity of going to Santiago de Compostela. I am sure your ship will offer a tour. If not, I have seen posts of people that hired a local/ driver guide to take them. Santiago is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain and also has a high historic significance. If you want to learn more about it go to:

Thanks. Have you tried any of the beaches?

We were there in October 2008, and blogged about the visit here. As the blog says, we really enjoyed the visit - nothing absolutely awe-inspiring, but pleasant and pretty. We especially enjoyed the climb up to the old castle, high up above the town.

The sail back up the river was beautiful, and makes me wonder if there are any simple trips out along the river.

We were there in April, 2009 as one of the last port stops on a eastbound TA on RCCL's Vision. DH and I just got off the ship and wandered. There is a great shopping center adjacent to the port, and even just looking at all the beautiful yachts and sailboats is a treat. The tall ships were in town for the weekend, and we watched their crews tidying up. We caught a city bus up to El Cortes Ingles (huge dept. store) and shopped for awhile. DH found a great deal on a Citizen's ecodrive watch and bought it from a small family-owned jewelery store. We would up at the portside shopping center where we bought a chilled bottle of lovely Galician white wine, and we sat watching the tall ships on a bench and drank our wine out of the bottle like a couple of winos, since we couldn't take it on the ship. All in all, it was a very nice day.

Vigo is a wonderful port. If you have not been there before, many people go to Santiago de Compostela. The cathedral is lovely. On our recent trip to Vigo (on the NCL Sun), we hired Brendan of Guided Galicia

He was fabulous! We took the "Two countries tour" and changed it a bit. He really showed us spots the buses never get to. His charges for 6 people for a full day tour were half of what the ship charges and you don't have to be on a cattle bus. He took us to a great restaurant in Baiona and translated for us. He also does tours of Santiago which are wonderful. Send him an email, you won't regret it!

hi

We were there last May. A group from CC hired a private driver/guide for Santiago. The church is still a place of pilgrimage for St. James. It is interesting to see confessionals with priests of every language lining the walls ready to hear the pilgrims confession.

Lots of gold stores. A very big farmer's market like the one in Las Rambles.

We used Brendan also - in July of 2008. He customized our tour which included Baiona as well as a walking tour of Vigo. His tours are very personal and you feel as though an old friend is showing you around.

FYI - Brendan told us that when he takes his family to the beach they go to Baiona.
