  1. also live in small village in North East-this weather is so unusually sunny-thank goodness we have a garden can self isolate in
  2. I have used SPB tours in past and several other St Petersburg companies offer tour packages in other Baltic ports however in todays uncertain travel times check cancellation policy
  3. we were due to do our first Cunard cruise in July-transatlantic on QM2 but cancelled before final payment we have been self isolating for over a week as my husband has compromised immune system However I have to go out every few days for fresh provisions as online supermarket delivery spots are impossible to find! working from home and husband on long term sick after stroke last year[unrelated to immune system problem] but hey life goes on and cruise critic is one of the ways to do it-thank you for all the funny posts-even from some posters who didn't mean to provide humour!
  4. oh thank you John bull and sddsdean for your humour in these trying times
  5. can well recommend Dorset day trips with Daren and his VW camper van Snowy had a great time touring all over Dorset with cruise port pick up and drop off book with him directly-unfortunately trip advisor trying to squeeze extra money out of local operators by asking extra to book via them and implying they are recommended way to go http://dorsetdaytrips.co.uk/
  6. you need to visit Venice for a day to see if it is worth a return visit personally we find the place over ated but if we had not been would have always wondered the joy of cruising for us is visiting several destinations for a taster to see if we would return some have been surprises-both pleasant and not so
  7. personally have never felt the urge to climb tower-apparently inner steps not easy being there first thing before crowds descend and getting photos of outside then off to rest of sightseeing would be my vote
  8. yes that approach is what we do for all ports but especially St Petersburg we have visited twice first time we used Anastasia for 3 of us second time TJ for 5 of us-both times went with the company most responsive to our mobility needs
  9. shorebee are a third party operator ie they don't run tours themselves but contract with local companies so quality may be variable the "water taxi" I think refers to a local boat operator who runs largish boats from jetty at Fira over to Oia transport back usually by bus to top of cliff so you have to take cable car or walk down donkey path They don't leave until they have a full boat so you could be waiting a while if you are one of first ones on
  10. rang Cunard today original flight was Virgin 9pm flight but premium economy fully booked however they offered us alternative flight on British Airways at same time and £250 pp for upgrade to premium economy or world traveller plus decided was worth it for chance to actually stand a chance to sleep on overnight flight in more comfortable seat with foot rest of course if they decided to upgrade us at no extra cost to business class with the lie flat beds I wouldn't object!!!
  11. I'd recommend Corfu taxi tours for a trip over the centre and to the other coast for some dramatic scenery However that could take up most of the 3 hours What do you want out of the beach stop? To sunbathe/go in water that is going to eat into your time and waste of money when you are paying for the taxi time by the hour I presume you have a decent amount of time in port so would suggest being dropped off at a local beach at end of tour
  12. thanks we booked direct with Cunard on their telephone line I need to ring anyway to check they received the wheelchair assistance forms for my husband
  13. we have include air back to uk presently at 9pm from JFK to Heathrow 9pm economy on virgin atlantic cant see online option to upgrade do we have to ring them?
  14. https://www.hittheroadmadeira.com/ Slyfox this is the company we used
  15. taxis on rank at Heathrow aren't keen to take short journeys either it took the 4th taxi inline to take us 10 minute journey to our daughter in Staines and that was a minimum rate of £35 Apparently they refuse a lot of local journeys as they are hoping for higher fares to London itself
  16. never sailed with Cunard before in July we will be sailing Southampton to New York and plan to fly to Indianapolis same day either JFK or La Guardia will there be transfer options or shore excursion visit New York with drop off at airport? we are familiar with NCL where this is commonly offered but no shore excursion info available as yet on cruise planner
  17. they cant accompany you on to sites they can tell you details on way and liase to pick up local guide at sites eg Pantheon it depends how much detail you want do you want qualified guide at extra cost who can answer every question or are you happy to wander through with a guide book and bit of pre knowledge from travel company?
  18. thank you all for your input its much appreciated have several options open and will be discussing with USA friends
  19. thanks we are on QM2 from Southampton to new York arriving 31st July-hence posting for advice on cruise critic We have a week before flight back to UK from JFK no internal flights/travel booked as yet as working out what is faesible We plan to visit friends in Indianapolis on disembarkation day and that is a separate research project getting through immigration and catching a flight out of New York on 4th August we will travel from Indianapolis to Newburgh/Beacon area to meet other friends before making way back to JFK on 7th for a late night flight home to avoid connecting flights plan to fly back to New York from Indianapolis and then will have to find way to get 70 miles North and this is where getting complicated as no direct train route which would have been our preferred method in the UK there are several car transport companies between major airports Gatwick and London which specialise in airport and cruise transfers .The Britain ports of call forum regularly posts recommended companies and I was trying to see if the same services exist in USA at reasonable cost thanks for your ball park figure as online quotation on above listed companies ask for flight details etc.As we are just trying to research that wont give us a quote it would involve car transfer both ways and to be honest I think we may have to have an alternative plan which involves meeting them in New York as any savings in hotel costs will blown away by extra transport costs my husbands mobility issues are with walking distances-he uses a walking stick but we hire mobility scooter locally to help him get around so no wheelchair accessible transport required for the trip we had in mind again thank you very much for your input
  20. thanks we will be going from JFK to an area near Catskills-nearest town Newburgh/Beacon NY where we will be staying with friends
  21. er thank you I think my research to find them is exactly why I am posting on here hoping to find local services endorsed by local people or at least those who have used them
  22. there are more than one but on NCL we have always been at Mol Adrassat [? spelling] over the long bridge
  23. Stolle pie shops are a "chain" of fast food which are a very popular option for a quick snack you choose a savoury or sweet slice for a very reasonable price which you can eat at your leisure-our guide brought us to a local park to consume and enjoy walking through If you don't want to spend your tour time at a sit down lunch or take a chance on what the packed lunchwill be like most tour guides should offer this
  24. Hotel Molino Stucky has its own water bus transfer which runs several times a day however in between times you can easily catch the regular water bus services by walking a few hundred yards away from hotel which gives you more freedom the hotel is also on the main Alilaguna boat transfer line between airport and cruise port
