Leaving luggage at New Orleans

Could someone please tell me if you can leave your luggage at the port and leave to see the sights of New Orleans and return a few hours later to check in your car and yourselves? We will be driving into New Orleans and the couple with us has never been to New Orleans, but we don't want to carry around all the luggage.

You can probably check luggage in around 10 am or so, but you will still have to deal with your carry ons.
