SRAFROG Posted April 27, 2010 #1 Share Posted April 27, 2010 I am so upset that RCCL is casting off us west coasters. I am on Mariner once a month. Have booked more cruises before she leaves. I ride a scooter and cannot fly because I dont have traveling companions to help me. I travel alone since my husband passed away last April. I live 20 minutes away from the pier. Never been on Carnival or Princess. Been on NCL before RCCL came out here. Celebrity is probably out of my price range since I have to pay double to sail. Any suggestions from anyone who has traveled these other cruise ships.
kath00 Posted April 27, 2010 #2 Share Posted April 27, 2010 Princess is the way to go! It is the most similar to Royal and has some beautiful ships on the West Coast right now (like the Sapphire). HAL is out of San Diego and has older/smaller ships there. I also hear it's very "quiet" on the ships after about 9pm. Not that I want to party all night but I like entertainment and lots of options, even if I choose to do nothing. You also have the Golden out of LA if you are inclined to see Hawaii. And Princess is still the king in Alaska. Carnival I guarantee you would hate. Just not your cup of tea, Barbara! Disney is going to be great as far as the ship and the amenities but I think it's mostly for families. Most areas of the ship revolve around children and the Disney theme, which to me as an adult is only fun when I see my 5 year old's eyes light up in excitement. If I wanted to sail with other adults only, it would not be on the list. NCL is pulling Norwegian Star in the Spring of 2011 so don't start a loyalty program with them unless you want to see a repeat of the Mariner! It'll be out of Tampa if I remember correctly. TC38 Posted April 27, 2010 #3 Share Posted April 27, 2010 Hey Barb!! Hope you are well! Feel for you losing Mariner, hopefully they will replace soon. We are 9 days off heading to FL to pick up Oasis for two weeks, can't wait!! Tony and Carolynn x
lovcruzing Posted April 27, 2010 #4 Share Posted April 27, 2010 I've been on NCL, Carnival, and RCCL, and HAL. Now that RCCL is gone Princess is the best ship out of what we have to choose from. I read somewhere that the Sapphire will be going into drydock next year and may be getting movies under the stars.
tracyanns Posted April 27, 2010 #5 Share Posted April 27, 2010 I have found many Celebrity sailings to be less expensive than RCCL...so don't rule it out, it is a great cruise line, nice ships and the best food of any cruise line we have sailed. A few years ago I paid less for a 13 day cruise than a 7 night RCCL cruise but well over Carnival so there are so many factors. Sorry to hear you are losing Mariner, great ship...but hope you find what you are looking for.
yogimax Posted April 27, 2010 #6 Share Posted April 27, 2010 We really enjoyed our Mexican Riviera cruise on the Norwegian Star. It ranked right up with RCCL as a favorite
Puffinater Posted April 27, 2010 #7 Share Posted April 27, 2010 If we sail from LA we will probably head out on Princess or give Carnival another try. Have also cruised NCL on the Star but will not return for personal reasons.
kath00 Posted April 27, 2010 #8 Share Posted April 27, 2010 I like Celebrity too but they don't do the MR. Just Alaska with repo cruises twice a year. Katherine
SDPadreFan Posted April 28, 2010 #9 Share Posted April 28, 2010 Carnival Spirit and Carnival Splendor. NCL or Princess when the opportunity strikes. I'm only 54 so I don't feel that I'm old enough for HAL yet.
SRAFROG Posted April 28, 2010 Author #10 Share Posted April 28, 2010 Padrefan, I guess you are upset that no RCCL ships are out of San Diego too. I called the D+ desk the other day re my May 9th cruise. While talking to them I voiced my opinion about them pulling the ships out of the west coast. The person I talked to said thay are getting lots of complaints. Good!
SRAFROG Posted April 29, 2010 Author #11 Share Posted April 29, 2010 Dont know if it will register with the RCCL brass, but everyone who is angry should send a message to them. Might be a wake up call to know how many people and how much revenue they are losing by abandoning us out here. Just saying.....
DonnaK Posted April 29, 2010 #12 Share Posted April 29, 2010 I'm hopeful that RCI will announce that they are replacing Mariner with another ship, even if it isn't year-round. If not, I'd choose Princess. We've sailed with them and feel that they provide a similar cruising experience.
