Rare Tom-n-Cheryl Posted January 31, 2005 #1 Share Posted January 31, 2005 I have read on here (and seen when onboard) that Carnival suggests you do not use your S&S card to lock/unlock the room safe - some have said that the magnetic encoding is "insufficient" to properly and predictably operate the safe. I am sure that some have tried using it. I have hesitated doing this due to the suggestion not to... but one wonders... It certainly would be easier to just use the S&S card!!! Give it up folks, tell me of your experiences - and perhaps save me the embarrassment of finding out firsthand!:o Tom
GroupCruiser Posted January 31, 2005 #2 Share Posted January 31, 2005 It works just fine. The thing is your Cabin Steward could have a copy of the S&S card, since it's also your Room Key. If you don't us it to lock your safe, there's no possible way they could get in your safe with a duplicate card.
sls Posted January 31, 2005 #3 Share Posted January 31, 2005 We used it and after 2 days the S&S card wouldn't work for the safe or the door. And let me tell you when you go to the pursers desk they are very snotty about it. You have to call house keeping for the safe and then go to pursers to get the card fixed. sls
sea_u_onboard Posted January 31, 2005 #4 Share Posted January 31, 2005 Your S&S will not IMPLODE if you use it :D . We used it on our first cruise and everything was fine. I feel the thinking behind this is - if you lose your S&S card - not only does the person have access to your cabin but they have access to your safe also. Now if you lose both cards at the same time - what would the difference be? Most people could figure out what the second card was for. Some have "hide" the second card in their cabin - but then again - what is the difference. If you want to use your S&S card - I say go for it. Just know that if something does happen Carnival will probably tell you that they suggested you not use the same card.
booboo4031 Posted January 31, 2005 #5 Share Posted January 31, 2005 I agree with that... I have always used the safe in the room for my passport, jewelry and things I've bought and have never had a problem... If there is and the room steward can't get in the safe... I'm sure ship's maintenance has a way:)
kujobie Posted January 31, 2005 #6 Share Posted January 31, 2005 I used mine without incident, only because I don't think they told us not to. This was a couple years ago. Otherwise just use something you can tolerate losing, like a library card or store discount card. Get a hole punched in it and the S and S and hang both on a lanyard around your neck. I think they give these away free in the casino and they'll punch the holes for you too. I just bring one from home.
tef43 Posted January 31, 2005 #7 Share Posted January 31, 2005 Let's say you use your S&S card to lock the safe, and then you lose your card. Not only is your cabin at risk, but so is the safe.
booboo4031 Posted January 31, 2005 #8 Share Posted January 31, 2005 There is no name or cabin number on your s&s card so the person that finds it would have to know your cabin number
tef43 Posted January 31, 2005 #9 Share Posted January 31, 2005 There is no name or cabin number on your s&s card so the person that finds it would have to know your cabin number Your name certainly *is* on your S&S card, and it is not terribly difficult to find out someone's cabin number if you were so inclined. Flip2cruise Posted January 31, 2005 #10 Share Posted January 31, 2005 There is no name or cabin number on your s&s card so the person that finds it would have to know your cabin number I have seen several people drop their S&S card when leaving the cabin. Also your name and dining time is embossed on the card, so someone would know when you will be gone. Why take the chance? Just use another card and hide it in the cabin. Another reason they ask you not to use you S&S card is because the card can become demagnitized and you wouldnt be able to enter you cabin. CEWayfarer Posted January 31, 2005 #11 Share Posted January 31, 2005 I used my S&S card for the safe, mostly because I didn't completely read the instructions.... DH was getting something from the safe and he said, "You know, you're really not supposed to use this card..". I didn't have any problems using it, but after reading these posts, I grabbed a couple emoty giftcards to use next time!
Rare Tom-n-Cheryl Posted January 31, 2005 Author #12 Share Posted January 31, 2005 On prior sailings, we have hidden a "generic" card in the room - likely will in the future too! Thanks! Tom
TXRoo Posted January 31, 2005 #13 Share Posted January 31, 2005 I think the distinction needs to be made between ships! Some ships use your S&S card as your room key...others have separate keys for the room and the S&S card. I know this because we are going on the Ecstasy and it was explicitly explained to us that our S&S card and our room key are not the same and that we would have to obtain a separate key for our safe. Cotton Posted January 31, 2005 #14 Share Posted January 31, 2005 Correct, TX. The safe on the Holiday uses a key paid, and you put your own four-digit number in to lock and unlock. The cabin key is a 'ving' card like hotels use.
pelletib Posted February 1, 2005 #15 Share Posted February 1, 2005 We use a grocery club card. DH uses it as a bookmark. Who would think to open a paperback book on the nightstand??
Cotton Posted February 1, 2005 #16 Share Posted February 1, 2005 Oooops, too late to go back and edit my post......but I meant to say the Holiday safes use a keyPAD.
CSDC Posted February 1, 2005 #17 Share Posted February 1, 2005 I used an old phone card and we hid it in a book that we placed in a drawer. It wasn't a hassle at all and we had no problems with the safe. Sue
mc'smom Posted February 1, 2005 #18 Share Posted February 1, 2005 On the Victory a few weeks ago my husband tried to unlock the safe with MY S&S card....I did not see this. Then I went to buy some jewellry with it, and guess what... It would not swipe.. I laughed it off ( thinking this was an omen) until I went to the bar and it would not swipe there...I returned to my room where it would not open the door.... I went to the pursers desk and exclaimed my card won't work ! They asked if I had tried using it on the safe.. Of course not I said.. when I returned to the pool and told my husband what happened he explains that he tried to use it on the safe and got frustrated when it would not open... LOL the pursers desk replaced it and when we disembarked in St. maarten I had to hold up the line while they took my picture again to re-board later... Advice... Bring a shoppers card with you, something you don't care about throwing away or loosing.. Have fun.
