bermuda triangle Posted June 7, 2010 Author #26 Share Posted June 7, 2010 Glad to hear that you liked your cabin. We are sailing in August and are in 420. Rigger:) I hope you enjoy it. The door to the deck is very convenient!! I decided to go again in Aug. What date are you going? Laura
Janet S. Posted June 7, 2010 #27 Share Posted June 7, 2010 Laura, would you happen to have a copy of a dining room menu or daily program to share. My sister and brother in law are going on a cruise for the first time and the only ones I have are from my recent trip to Alaska. Just wanted to give them a better idea of what to expect. Thanks, Janet

Thanks, Janet Hi Janet, Someone (my hubby) misplaced the cord to our printer/scanner/copier so I can't upload a complete program. Do you want to know for a sea day or a day you are in port? I will type it in. I do not have any menus, I didn't think to photo them..sorry. Laura
Janet S. Posted June 7, 2010 #29 Share Posted June 7, 2010 Laura, thanks so much for your help. A sea day would be great if it's not too much trouble. Just trying to explain what happens on a cruise ship to my sister. Since they've never been they have no idea what to expect. I really appreciate your help. Thanks so much. barante Posted June 8, 2010 #35 Share Posted June 8, 2010 Congratulations on your review. I learned a lot about the cruise but also about your likes and dislikes. I read it primarily because I am contemplating a 28-day Latin American cruise on the Veendam but also because I am a fan of Bermuda. This is one run where the cruise line or cabin type matters relatively little because the ship is not the destination. Bermuda is. I must say I am a bit confused. If the Veendam was too heavy to get to Hamilton how did it get there? Anyway, there is something magic to be tied up at Hamilton. The sea front is undergoing many changes as is the rest of the island. We spent one night in St. George on an NCL cruise years ago and two nights in Hamilton. We found the bus/ferry system both affordable and quite good. A funny thing happened to me on a bus: We were going through little coastal hamlets and I had a feeling I had been here before. I suddenly realized how much it resembled me of some South African towns in the 1980s, particularly around British-influenced Port Elizabeth. Now, my situation: This year's run on that South American repositioning cruise on the Veendam seems to have been quite unhappy. Lots of bitching and moaning about this and that, particularly after people began comparing what each had paid. Apparently the really slashed prices after the final payment deadline. But I want to go nevertheless. We have unexpired Brazilian visas and I have always wanted to see the Amazon. Bucket list stuff. Also this itinerary will apparently not be offered in 2012. Maybe next fall we can return to Bermuda.

For our next cruise I happen to be around the corner from my previous cabin, this time in an obstructed ocean view. I spend hardly any time in the cabin so it makes no difference to me. The Veendam is too heavy to get through Town Cut for St. George's. Apparently the Bermudian government is contemplating dredging/widening the area so the Veendam can dock in St. George's next year. There is plenty of room for the Veendam in Hamilton! If you decide to go to S. America have a great trip! Once HAL stops offering a specific cruise it can be 10+ yrs before they offer it again...case in point Bermuda. Laura
Valentino Posted June 8, 2010 #37 Share Posted June 8, 2010 The Veendam came into Hamilton direct again, the swells outside the reef are just a tad too uncomfortable to tender up outside of St. Georges. A lot of happy campers me thinks!

Apparently the Bermudian government is contemplating dredging/widening the area so the Veendam can dock in St. George's next year. Laura Don't hold your breath waiting for the Town Cut to be widened in the near future, or perhaps ever. We were told that the cost to widen the cut would be around $50 million. That's not an investment the BDA gov't is likely to make. Plus, public opinion seems to be equally split for and against the widening. The tendering process on the May 30 voyage worked just fine, BTW!

NextOne Posted June 10, 2010 #41 Share Posted June 10, 2010 I've also seen favorable articles about allowing casinos in Bermuda, too. I think both issues are a long way from being resolved!
bermuda triangle Posted June 11, 2010 Author #42 Share Posted June 11, 2010 I've also seen favorable articles about allowing casinos in Bermuda, too. I think both issues are a long way from being resolved! I'm not disagreeing with you. As I stated originally the Bermudian government is contemplating widening Town Cut. The article supported this. Who knows what the ultimate decision is, but in no way am I "holding my breath" waiting. I don't care either way, I don't mind tendering. Initially I was concerned about my 90 yr old grandmother tendering, and with the exception of rude passengers, the tendering process was fine. On the next cruise to tender I hear it was even better. DutchByAssociation Posted June 11, 2010 #43 Share Posted June 11, 2010 The original plan was to dock in St. Georges but HAL discovered rather late in the game that the remodled and now heavier Veendam cannot make it through the cut into the harbour-----hence the anchoring and tendering. This was discussed at great length a few months ago on this board.I mentioned on another thread that I am praying for winds strong enough to force us into Hamilton for the duration of our stay and we can avoid the tendering altogether. This did happen on the first two cruises this season. just a reminder that when it was discovered compared to the dry dock is speculation as no announcement was ever made. duchess7 Posted June 13, 2010 #44 Share Posted June 13, 2010 Did they tell you that they were from New "Yawk" and maybe NJ too or are you just assuming that that's where all of the obnoxious people were from? There are ugly Americans all over the country
