Scott_F Posted May 30, 2010 #1 Share Posted May 30, 2010 Not sure what the consensus view is on these. I have a feeling they are getting into folks wallets pretty hard, but... My wife bought a very nice print on our Valentines cruise. She was waiting for Hobby Lobby to have a framing sale. Just got it hung on the bedroom wall this weekend. Gotta say, she did good. I figured she got hosed but when I did a little checking, her price paid was fairly good by art house standards. She was spending her craps table winnings, and also had enoughnleft over to pay our sign and sail card. When Mama's on a craps heater, I always smile (and never touch her table). ;)

LHP Posted May 30, 2010 #3 Share Posted May 30, 2010 As with jewelry or any other expensive item...it is best to be as educated as possible to make an informed decision. Yes, the Art Auction can get in your wallet if someone doesn't know what they are doing. Glad she likes her painting and did so well in the Casino. CorvetteLady Posted May 30, 2010 #5 Share Posted May 30, 2010 If you had just scrolled down the page you would have seen today's art auction poll and could have commented there. ;)
Solo1959 Posted May 30, 2010 #6 Share Posted May 30, 2010 Not sure what the consensus view is on these... They've been around for a LONG time on almost every cruise line. That tells me that the consensus is enough people buy from them. And it is profitable for the companies. It also suggests that it is not as bad a deal as some would make it out to be, or it would have been boarded up and the operators thrown in jail a long time ago. If you see something you like, and you want it, and you have the money for it, and it looks like a decent price - feel free to buy and enjoy it. Not my cup of tea, but it looks like a fair game. debates2 Posted May 30, 2010 #7 Share Posted May 30, 2010 Art is subjective. Its like anything you might buy in a port of call where bartering is allowed. Set a price and don't budge. If you think it's worth $100 buy it. I think some of the art is nice, but the art auctions simply appear to be another device to make money for the cruise lines. Just my opinion. golfadj Posted May 30, 2010 #8 Share Posted May 30, 2010 Lots of new cruisers on each cruise that for some reason believe what they are told.
