smoke on ships

palavra

Recommended Posts

We had been excited about planning our first cruise until I began to read about all the smoke on the ships. My daughter has asthma that is exacerbated by cigarette smoke and I tend to get sinus infections if I am around smoke. While I don't expect a cruise ship to be smoke free, will we be able to avoid most of the smoke if we stay out of the casino and bars? Is smoking allowed in the restaurants?

Smoking is NOT allowed in ANY of the restaurants, or the main showroom or the Atrium Bar. I'm a smoker so I'm not sure of all the OTHER places that smoking is NOT allowed, but there are many and it varies on each ship. In the piano bar, usually, smoking is NOT allowed around the piano, but further back in the room.

On every ship there is NO smoking allowed on one entire side of the ship when out on deck (I think its the port side).:) On the SPLENDOR, I noticed that NO smoking is allowed anywhere on the Lido deck.

Most non-smokers complain the most about the casino, I think. I'm sure many others will chime in (especially the non-smoking-cheerleaders) giving you much more specific information about which areas to avoid.:D

Have a great cruise. :)

To be a cheerleader you have to be for something so I guess you are a smoking cheerleader!:D As a non smoker without pom poms the main place for you to avoid is the casino. I do gamble a little and I expect to smell like an old ashtray when I leave:eek:. My choice so I don't complain. The previous statement was just that not a complaint. I have never had a cabin that smelled of smoke so they do a good job. Funny story after our stop in Jamaica last time we smelled a funny smoke in the hallway.....Hmmmm wonder what that was?

My first question would be....What ship are you cruising on? Some ships now (Splendor and Dream) have slightly different rules than other ships in the common areas...;)

Avoid the casino, bars and starboard side of the Lido deck and you should be okay. Also depending on weather conditions the engine exhaust could be a problem at the rear of the ship.

Carnival instituted designated smoking areas several years ago....

smokers are allowed to smoke in their cabins and balconies (except Spa cabins on the Dream and Splendor).

Smoking is not allowed in the hallways....but some smokers will prop their doors open and flood the hallways with smoke. This is not allowed, so if your child has an issue....just call Guest Services to ask the smoker not to do this.

Public places are piano bar, disco, casino, cover band lounge (on the Fantasy class ships) cigar bar (if the ship has one) and sports bar (if the ship has one).

The starboard side out by the pool (except on the Splendor where all of Lido ~indoors and outdoors is nonsmoking because of the retractable roof) on all ships..... EXCEPT the Dream... which is PORT side.

This is why Jessemon asked which ship....because they do vary a little depending on the class of ship.

BE SURE to list the asthma on the Camp Carnival information sheet you will fill out. If Camp Carnival is using the disco for Camp Carnival activities, there will be no smoking allowed during that time....BUT some people can react to smoke that is as old as 72 hours....so check with them.

The smoking areas will be listed in the fun times when you board the ship. The only places I ever notice a lot of smoke is the casino and the piano bar. But there is no smoking allowed in the MDR or the lido restaurant. A good portion of lounge or bar areas on most ships are non smoking. It depends on the ship for specific areas but they will be well outlined for everyone when you get on the ship.

I guess I should have been more clear in my first post. Yes, I've checked the Carnival site for the smoking areas on the ships but wasn't clear about the restaurants. I was also not born yesterday. Are the rules enforced? How likely am I or my daughter to encounter smoke in areas that are supposed to be off limits?

This truly depends on the ship, the port and the clientele.

Longer cruises are probably the best. Less party atmosphere....

It also depends on the number of smokers and their ages. Older smokers are more considerate. However, if you get a younger crowd (that just experienced their first beer)....then there can be issues.

Carnival implemented the designated smoking areas to stop passengers from walking from venue to venue with a lit cigarette and for the most part it does. However, when some folks get one to many beers in them..."they forget".

As stated earlier...the designated smoking areas are listed in the Caper (oops Fun Times) every day. The locations do not change...they are listed every day as a reminder.

I was also not born yesterday.

You make it sound like people are lying to you.

If you are that worried, sail a ship that doesn't allow any smoking. Otherwise, believe what people tell you and stay away from smoking areas on your ship.

Someone who sailed on the Dream recently said you could no longer smoke in the piano bar...dont know for sure if thats a fact or not, but guess we will find out in july!

The piano bar on the Dream has been "smoking" and then "nonsmoking" on and off since she started sailing.

Even when the piano bar is smoking...it is not allowed around the piano...only on one side of the bar.

Nothing like keeping people on their toes :) We will have a good time, non smoking or not :p

I will agree with other posters. Designated smoking areas vary a little depending on what ship you sail.

Best places to avoid would be the casino, bars and port side where smokers have the right to smoke. Lido decks vary from ship to ship as do the piano bars.

There is no smoking in any area around food or in the main theater.

You should be fine.

Have a great cruise.:D

I am also very sensitive to smoke. I have not found smoking to be a problem. I can tell I am near the casino, or the smoking lounge, but it is easy to avoid. We had a balcony one time, and I loved it. But I have heard of balcony users having neighbors who smoke heavily. If people are smoking on the upper decks, it is easy to avoid the smoke.

In my experience, I think you will be fine. Have a fun trip! Kathy

Honestly, I can't tell you with 100% certainty that no one will decide to try to smoke in an area where it isn't allowed. It depends completely on the passengers that week. But I would say that it's the same odds as on land. Just be aware of the smoking areas; try to avoid them; and if you notice someone smoking where they aren't supposed to, let ship security know. From my experience, most smokers on cruise ships have been considerate and smoked only in the designated areas. If a non smoker happens to be in those areas, it's up to them to leave if it bothers them. Your daughter should be able to eat and enjoy herself safely, although I would make sure you have all her medication handy just in case.

I did not intend to sound like that. That was not directed at the posters on here. I meant that I know that not everyone will follow the posted rules on the cruise ship or anywhere else for that matter. For my daughter, smoke is truly dangerous to her health. I asked for personal opinions from people who have cruised before because I know that rules aren't always enforced.

There are always those who don't follow the rules and will light up were they are not supposed to.

Sm owing is also not allowed in any corridor but is permitted in cabins and on balconies.

I also am allergic to smoke, cigar, cigarette or other. I was on the Freedom a few weeks back and everyone seemed more that happy to follow the rules. Walking thru the ship I never really smelled it, only when I was in the casino and disco. Both of the places I could handle for about an hour, before I can't breath good and have to step out for some fresh air. Otherwise it was perfectly fine. I must say also my other allergies were great on the open sea!

I did though occasionally smell the "sweet smoke" :D during the day in our cabin hallway.

To the OP:

The ships passengers change every week. It is hard to say how bad the smoking situation will be.

Sometimes the rules are enforced, sometimes not.

Just follow the advice of those who have already posted.

I have horrible asthma, but the smoke has never bothered it (even in the casinos). The only place I have even noticed it was in the casino and bars, 2 places your daughter won't be going to anyways.

You may want to check out other lines. We smokers have less and less areas to smoke. Carnival so far is the most smoker friendly. And thank God for that. You may want to check into Celebrity.
