Recent visitors to gothenburg need advise

Never been but am going this summer. Try:

http://www.goteborg.com/en/Travel/

Check out calendar of event. Depending on when you're there the "Gothia Cup" will be on-giong. Largest youth soccer tournement in the world. However, even if you're not a soccer fan, there are a lot of extras on-going during the cup the accommodate all the extra visitors.

Also try this site:

http://wikitravel.org/en/G%C3%B6teborg

After you scroll through the usual wikipedia stuff there is a listing of things to see and do with links to most of the individual sights.

Canal Boat tour and Goteplatsen are two of Fodor's favorite things to see and do. BTW go to your local bookstore/library and thumb through (quickly) a "Fodor's" or "Frommer's" or other guide book and see if anything pops at you.

We recently did a ship tour on Princess (very reasonable) which included a site seeing tour and then a canal ride. The city looked very charming to walk around in.

We would have gone back into town with the shuttle but the day was chilly so after our tour we stayed on the ship. Nicer weather and we would have gone out again. We passed an amusement park and I read there is a lovely bontanical garden there too.

WE walked through town and along canal to old town of Haga where the original wooden houses have been renovated. LOvely town to stroll around, pretty flowers everywhere. Very friendly laid back atmosphere. Made me want to live in Sweden. Actually preferred Gothenburg to Stockholm!!

Gothenburg is Sweden's second-largest city and there's quite a lot to do, try this link:http://www.goteborg.com/en/ and I'm sure You'll find something to do! It's a beautiful city with easy-access everywhere, thanks to the trams, and the archipelago is well worth visiting. Try the seafood - it's absolutely fresh and new and just about as good as it can get in northern Europe!

We just returned form a Star Princess cruise that included Gothenburg...took the ships shuttle into downtown and then wondered around. You need their currency (Krona) even to use a washroom at McDonalds...

Did not do the Padden Boats on the canal as it was soooo COLD (yes we hit poor weather)

however we did ride the Stinsen Train around - it left from right where the shuttle bus dropped us off. It was very cheap with a very good english commentary by a real live person. This little tram allowed for HOHO and had 2 stops. They accepted credit cards.

Would suggest that this would be an easy port to do on your own - take the shuttle to town - walk to the Padden Boats (2 blocks) for a canal ride then garb the Stinsen Train taking the time to get off at each of the 2 stops - the 2nd stop is at the old part of the city.
