They are on Sunday (captain's dinner and reception) and Thursday night. You will love this ship and cruise.

Do most women on the first formal night wear long dresses and do the guys wear tuxes? Is there any time where the guys can just wear shorts and shirt in the main dining room for dinner?

They specify no shorts for any night for dinner in the main dining room. It will state that in the daily compass. You can wear shorts in the Windjammer though. We did not eat in the MTD for either of the formal nights (we went to a specialty restaurant) because we did not bring formal clothing. However walking around the ship before and after dinner I only noticed one or two tuxes and long gowns. Lots of suits and cocktail dresses.
