Anyone Every Taken Amtrak to Get To Brooklyn, NY Terminal???

Hey Folks:

 

Traveling from Virginia to NY to embark from the Brooklyn terminal. Has anyone ever taken Amtrak to travel to Brooklyn? If so, what is the closest station to the cruise terminal? How far is it from the cruise terminal?

 

Any advise on planning this?

You probably want to ask this over in the 'East Coast Departures' forum.

 

The Brooklyn cruse port is 'not well served' by public transportation [mild understatement] and in any event, NYC public transport is not for folks encumbered by luggage.

 

Penn Station has a taxi stand and taxi dispatcher, at street level. Fare to the Cruise terminal is about $35

Did Amtrak from Virginia to Florida once. Never again. Food was awful and overpriced and otherwise it was maybe a half-step uo from Greyhound.

I take Amtrak fairly often. However the only station in NYC is PENN Station which is in Manhattan (a separate island from Brooklyn despite being in the same city). Also Penn is underground and the taxi's are on street level up several escalators from the tracks. Not all that easy with luggage but possible.

 

Also serving Penn station is the Long Island RR, which is a commuter railroad that has some stops in Brooklyn, but I don't know if that will get you any closer to the terminal.

many of the directions are poor. The information is also out of date on the tolls and has been wrong for five years. The tolls into NY from NJ are $8 cash, $6 off peak and $8 peak for a car.

d "take Exit 27 - Atlantic Avenue. Make Left onto Columbia Street. Make a left onto Congress Street. Proceed one block to Hicks Street and make a right. Follow Hicks Street until it dead ends at Hamilton Avenue (adjacent to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel). Make a right onto Hamilton Avenue. Follow it to Van Brunt Street and make a left. Go two blocks and make right onto Bowne Street. Enter the terminal at Bowne and Imlay intersection."

 

why turn left on Congress to Hicks? this is the long way. You can go straight down Columbia make the first right into a street that becomes Van Brunt. Shorter almost no traffic and only two traffic lights instead of at least 5 more the other way.

 

the closest LIRR train station is the Atlantic avenue/ Flatbush Avenue terminal of the LIRR. Its about a $10 car service ride(its about 2.5 miles from the Cruise terminal). Of course the LIRR is only accessible for those who live/fly on/into Long Island. Its the train you would use if you land at MacArthur Airport(instead of a $100 car service ride)

AmTrak Richmond to Penn Station in Manhattan. Then a taxi to Brooklyn cruise terminal (probably $40 +/=). Elevators and escaltors ease way to cab stand.

LIRR from Penn Station to Atlantic Avenue Station in Brooklyn (close to Brooklyn Cruise Terminal) does not work well - you'd have to go out to Jamaica then change trains again and back-track to Atlantic Avenue.

the red caps(porters) at Penn station will happily take you and your luggage to the cabs for a tip....
