spacewoman Posted June 18, 2010 #28 Share Posted June 18, 2010 Not to spoil your nauticalness. It WILL come in handy, but in this case look for the side with the ash trays!!!:D just kidding. I'm laughing so hard I'm almost on the floor:D:D:D This board has made a very lousy week almost bearable!!!!
spacewoman Posted June 18, 2010 #29 Share Posted June 18, 2010 OK, you've got all your port and starboard lessons. Now its time to move on to bulkheads, passageways, bows, sterns, poopdecks, overheads, ladders, midships, hatches, bridges, and more,,,,,, above, below, forward, aft, and fenders, lines and halyards will be a stretch. Cleats and bollards, and dolphins might get you tied up a bit too,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,And don't forget where your 'head' is.,:eek::eek::D I know a lot of people that have their head up a place where the "sun don't shine":D
Bay Bob Posted June 18, 2010 #30 Share Posted June 18, 2010 Which makes me wonder why the ships often dock with their starboard side against the port :D
jordanaire Posted June 18, 2010 #31 Share Posted June 18, 2010 Ok..so if I'm standing and looking toward the front of the ship..starboard is on my right and port on my left..right? Then..for public places such as the lido deck..which side is smoking and which is non smoking? Thanks! Easy way to remember...."LEFT" has 4-letters and so does "PORT"! :cool:Bill
dan40 Posted June 18, 2010 #32 Share Posted June 18, 2010 Which makes me wonder why the ships often dock with their starboard side against the port :D The names, port and starboard go way back. When sailing ships had STEERING BOARDS along the aft, right, SIDE of the ship. Not the middle rear like rudders of today. Since the steering board was in the way then, they always docked with the other side against the dock. It became the port side for obvious reasons. Somehow steerboard became starboard, and became the name of the other side. Might have been all the ARRRRRghing made them pronounce things funny.:D Today, there is no reason to only use one side against the dock. And in the case of cruise ships many reasons [$] to use each side approx. equally so that each is salable to pax. So now ships are docked either "port side to," or starboard side to." osiebosie Posted June 18, 2010 #33 Share Posted June 18, 2010 And aft and ass both begin with "a" and have three letters, and are in back... Just in case you didn't know. We had an aft cabin once (very nice, on the Spirit) and DH kept calling it ass. Shay
