We booked a hotel package through our travel agent last time and will do it again for our next pre-cruise in Rome. The package consisted of transfers from the airport to Rome and from Rome to the port, hotel, and a few tours. It was a lot less money than going through the cruiseline.

We stayed at Hotel des Artistes and used Rome Cabs for our transferts. It was just perfect, the hotel was very close to a metro station and from there very easy to get to all the main attractions; it was a quaint hotel, clean and reasonably priced with lots of decent restaurants around.

Rome Cabs were very good and very punctual with the pick-ups. We would do the same again in a heartbeat.

We booked our Vatican tour with Viator.com and were just absolutely delighted with our guide, Stephanie.

The rest of our time in Rome, we used the hop on, hop off bus and it was perfect.

Hope that it helps

We found a wealth of information in the PORTS OF CALL forum. There is a sub forum for Italian ports which discusses transfers, hotels and tours. We chose to take the train and found it very easy, but many different options are discussed on this board.

We stayed at the Giovy B & B near Termini Station, got the Roma Pass to get admiission to most sites and bus/subway access. We took the express train from Termini to Civitiveccia, then it's a short walk to the shuttles that bring you to the ship.

The train is very cheap and had lots of cruisers on it. The luggage was the only hassle.

You'll love Rome. We can't wait to go back. Giovy is very close to Termini...and we got around the city with ease using public transit.

I would like to second Rome Cabs. Fabulous experience!

Third vote for RomeCabs - great service at a reasonable price. They were on-time, professional and efficient with clean and modern cars.

We too used Rome Cabs for transfers from Airport to the city (45 Euro) and from the city to the port (125 Euro) for our November Transatlantic cruise.

We booked our own accommodations finding that Celebrity's hotels were both more expensive and not within close walking distance of the area we wanted to stay in. I don't know when you're traveling but our trip was in November during the off season and we double checked hotel rates about 2 weeks before our cruise and found prices were much lower all over Rome. We cancelled and booked a hotel 1/2 block from the Trevi fountain for a fraction of their normal in-season rate and they gave us a great room with a private roof top patio too. So be sure to double check rates in the area a few days before your hotel's cancellation deadline.

We did book pre-cruise (one night prior) and xfers directly from Celebrity for our cruise from Rome last November. For a variety of reasons, it was a reasonable price and we really found it convenient.

At the Rome airport, Celebrity had a representative just outside of customs. He helped us collect our luggage and contacted the ground transportation. In the past, I have travelled using independent ground xfers -- they meet you outside of baggage claim where it is a zoo -- so only after you've collected your luggage and schleped it out do they call the ground transportation. Our rep wheeled our luggage out to the waiting van and loaded it up.

Xfer directly to the hotel (Crowne Plaza) -- nice enough hotel, not terribly convenient to the sights in Rome , but they provided a free shuttle to and from the center of the city.

Room was very quiet. Our rate included breakfast. Group with whom Celebrity contracted to handle the ground arrangements was very efficient. Ground xfer picked up our bags from just inside our room at 6:00am (DH and DD didn't hear them -- I of course was already up!) and all bags met us at the ship - didn't need to touch them again.

Since we had the hotel and xfer through the cruise line, we had our choice of xfer times -- we were on the first bus out and at the terminal nice and early. Our stateroom was already ready and luggage started to arrive before we finished freshening up!

Full price of the one night of hotel and the xfer package would have been a bit pricey, but we got a better price through our travel agent. But it certainly was nice not having to do any legwork or separate arrangements.

We have used RIL several times over the years and would highly recommend them. They are efficient, knowledgeable and prices are very fair.

Email Jany (who doesn't sleep) & she will get back to you very quickly with answers to help you make informed decisions. Check out the Ports Forum - there are hundreds of recommendations for this Company there. Must be a reason!

Happy Cruising!
