I'm from NY also, but I did a google search for "New York Times" and I found a site which shows the lead-in to the article. When you click on it, it indicates that if you create an account, you can check out articles for free. A quick look-see didn't reveal any request for credit card info., etc. I can't vouch for it, and in the end there may be some charge, but thought you might like to evaluate yourself....
