Excellent!

Well, Coral, have you booked the cruise yet?

SJNB, we are considering renting a car in Saint John and wondered if you thought it is a good idea. My husband wants to visit Irving Nature Park (he wants to take pictures of the birds there) and we thought about driving to St. Andrews (friends recommended that). We decided that it might be easier to do it on our own than try to find public transportation or ship's excursions. Is this a reasonable idea?

Wow!! Thank you for such great info! Exactly what I've been looking for!

We'll be in Canada/New England in October, and have already scheduled kayaking excursions. One is in Bar Harbor, Maine, and I can't recall if the other is in Saint John or Halifax. In your opinion, are we idiots? Will we be so cold we won't be able to enjoy it? I always work up a sweat when I kayak, but I'm beginning to have reservations about the wind/chill factor.

Thanks for your input!

The Irving Nature Park is very nice for hiking and about a 10-15 min drive from the cruise terminal. St. Andrews is about a 45min-1hr drive from Saint John. Route 1 is well market and you can't miss the exit for St. Andrews. If you were to rent a car, and then either stop at the Market Sq. visitor info centre, or Reversing Falls Info centre, they have very good city maps and will highlight out a route for you to use. They also have maps of New Brunswick, and will show you the exits to use for St. Andrews. Hertz has an office in Market Sq. just up for the info centre, and Avis is across the street from the terminal. Market Square is about a 10 min walk from the Terminal. just walk out and turn left and walk up the street.

We are going next month and I have already booked a rental car in Saint John's and we are driving to St. Martin to kayak through the caves and the Bay of Fundy. :) The guy at the Kayak company has been very helpful and said it is about a 45 minute drive to his shop. I hope it will work out! We can't wait.

Hi,

It looks like I won't be doing the Canada/NE cruise this year. I really need a "relaxing vacation" around that time and I know that I will be incredibly busy if I book that cruise. My tentaive plans is a short land vacation in October (maybe San Diego if air prices) cooperates and then I booked a Caribbean cruise for December to join a friend. I will definitely relax in the Caribbean because the ports really don't interest me there.

The other reason why I decided to wait is that I really like the repo cruise next year on the Grand - from Quebec to FLL. It is earlier next year compared to the repo this year. I may book that cruise. I do prefer the Sea Princess though.

I went to St. Martin's last year from Saint John's. I wasn't overly impressed and wouldn't recommend that tour. I wanted to do St. Andrews and people seemed to recommend that tour but my mom didn't want to do the hour commute each way.

SJNB, Thanks for all this info. It's hard to believe, but I do still have a question? We are scheduled to be in Saint John from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Would there be enough time if we rented car, to see both St. Andrews and Saint Martins? And would it really take 5 to 6 1/2 hours each? Are they in the same direction out of Saint John? Would two old ladies on our own be safe to try and travel the route ourselves? Or should we settle for one of the ship's tours? Any further info would be greatly appreciated.:D

Saint John to St. Andrews is about 1.5 hrs to the West

Saint John to St. Martins is about 45 min to the East

Both roads are very good and well marked, but It would be a rushed day if you tried to do both.

Will be in Saint John on a Sunday (Sept. 24). Will many ofthe points of interest be open on a Sunday? I notice that the City Market it closed.

Saint John does have Sunday shopping. I believe the Market has opened before on Sundays when there was a ship in port, however I believe it was up to each vendor if they chose to open. The best thing to do would be to call the Visitor Centre closer to the time you will be here and they would have an idea of what will be open 1-866-GO FUNDY (463-8639)

hope that helps

SJNB,

Thanks for the quick answer. My husband wants to go to Irving Nature Park so we are renting a car. We only have 7 1/2 hours in port so we don't have a lot of time to explore. I'd like to see the Market if it is open so I will check when it is nearer to time.

(Just looked back at my previous posts and realize that I am repeating myself. Sorry!

Thanks for the prompt response. I think we will do St. Andrews and see the Alonquin Hotel and then browse around Saint John. Have to be back to the ship by 6:00 for sailing at 7:00. Wouldn't want to be stuck on the road and watch the Constellation sail away without us.:p
