Does CC give us a price list of extras, like drinks, when we first arrive? Or are we just in shock at the end when we see our bill?

No price list just ask the server when being served, and keep up to date with your account daily. Some ships have an option to view your account info on the room TV, on others simply go to guest services desk and ask them.

 

No reason to be shocked really if your proactive...

You will sign for each charge, keep the charge slips if you charge a lot as a way to remember them. At the end check the charges against the charge slips.

There are bar menus that list the drink prices around the ship. Also, you have to sign a receipt for every purchase.

 

It is smart to keep a note of all the purchases. My friend budgeted $200 for drinks and other purchases onboard. Just kept signing those receipts all week, not keeping track. Had a s&s bill of over $500!

Everyone is different, but I found a Ziploc bag was perfect for keeping all of my receipts in one place!

Exactly, we always ask for a bar menu.

 

The first cruise is the worst cruise when it comes to bar bills. Now I know my bill is going to run about $170 a day.

 

As to keeping receipts, I cleaned out my backpack (that I carry when I'm on a cruise) and found a boat load of receipts from a year ago :o. I must just stuff them in there and forget them.

If you do other things like carnival tours or buy stuff in their stores need to watch this as well.

The photo gallery does not do a great job of posting prices, and the pricing for different types of pictures differ even if it is the same size picture. Make sure you ask before purchasing.
