Portofino by car

Having tasted Portofino a few years ago when our cruise ship stopped for a very short stay, we'd like to make Portofino part of a pre-cruise itinerary this fall while we have a rental car. Anyone have any info or thoughts about seeing this pretty little town as we drive from Lake Garda to La Spezia. How is parking? We'll have our cruise luggage - will it be safe? We plan to spend two nights in La Spezia and see the Cinque Terre.

Driving to Portofino is not a problem and you might want to also spend a little time in Santa Margherita (Ligure) which is on the route. As to parking, there is a decent parking garage in the center of Portofino...although it is going to cost you a few Euros.
