I can only help with St. Thomas. My kids, 5 and 11, really enjoyed the island tour from Henry of EEE tours. Depending on how long you are on port, if they are offering a trip to Tortola to the Baths, that would be my first choice. Also, Saint John is lovely.

In Saint Martin, we had booked the 3 island snorkel with Captain Alan - however we missed the port due to strong swells from a brewing hurricane.

What does your family enjoy? Is it the beach? Shoppiing? Adventure activities? There are a lot of things to do that aren't "booze cruise" sort of things....

Go to the "Port of Call " boards and see what others have done...or take the kids to a library, get a guidebook and read up on your ports before you start paying for excursions. There are things that are easy and cheap to do on your own!

Hi we did southern caribbean on explorer in 2009 with son aged 8 and twins daughters aged 5;

St Thomas - got in taxi at the port and spent the morning at megan's bay - the best beach in the world - just stood there and turtles were swimming feet away from us - back to the boat for lunch and then around the shops and up the cable car for great views and the kids watched the parrot show.

St Maarten - hired a car and drove to Grand Case to go on the seaworld explorer

Dominica - did a tour which my son found interesting but the girls weren't really bothered about

Barbados - did a tour taking in a boat trip out of holetown to swim with turtles/feed the fish, stopped of at the wildlife centre to see the monkeys and then a short tour along the east coast back to the port.

None of the tours we did through the ship all were booked beforehand via the internet with tour operators recommended on the ports of call boards.
