YoungRestlessOne Posted July 29, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 29, 2010 We will be on the Pride of America this fall and have decided to do the Kapalua Zipline in West Maui on Day 2. My question is...does it make sense to keep our rental car for a second day, or would it be cheaper and less hassle to take a taxi there and back? Has anyone traveled to this zipline from where the ship docks in Kahului? I would appreciate any feedback to help me make my decision. We are renting a car on Day 1 to drive the Road to Hana ourselves. I'm assuming if it's cheaper to keep the car and drive to Kapalua we would want a different route than Highway 340 since our nerves will already be jangled from RTH the day before, right? Please help!
CruiserBruce Posted July 29, 2010 #2 Share Posted July 29, 2010 I would go with the rental- a taxi is going to be pretty expensive. Is Highway 340 the road around the northern part of the west island to Kapalua? It is nowhere near as crooked, or slow, as the road to Hana. YoungRestlessOne Posted July 29, 2010 Author #3 Share Posted July 29, 2010 It looks like 340 is the road around the northern part of West Maui. I've read on a couple of sites, though, that rental cars are forbidden to drive it because it is so treacherous. I'm looking for alternate routes to get to Kapalua if we keep the car. CruiserBruce Posted July 29, 2010 #4 Share Posted July 29, 2010 The alternative route would be around the southern part of the west side of the island, thru Lahaina and Kaanapali. I don't recall being restricted on the route you are refering to. Maybe I missed it in our car contracts, but we have taken a rental car that way. Unless something has changed in the last couple of years, I don't recall anything significant that would make that route dangerous.
GypRasc Posted July 29, 2010 #5 Share Posted July 29, 2010 Attached is a good map of Maui. I would suggest going down Hwy 30 to stay on the good roads. I have no idea what Hwy 340 is like going North but it doesn't look like much on the map which is why I suggest taking 30 to the West side and up. beachchick Posted July 30, 2010 #6 Share Posted July 30, 2010 A rental car is the way to go. A taki from Kahului to Kapalua would be at least $175 r/t. Take 380 across the island, connect with 30, and take 30 up to Kapalua. beachchick
YoungRestlessOne Posted July 30, 2010 Author #7 Share Posted July 30, 2010 Thanks to all of you! I think we will keep the rental car and definitely take Route 30. After driving RTH on Day 1, I think we will have had our fill of adventurous roadways! LOL
beachchick Posted August 2, 2010 #8 Share Posted August 2, 2010 Good choice because taking 340 isn't just an investment in challenging driving. It's an investment in time. You need to allow 1-1/2 hours minimum for non-stop driving. The only reason to drive it is to take the time to stop for sight-seeing much like the RTH is a drive for scenery and stopping. Mind you, 340 is not horrible or impossible if you're a confident, experienced driver, but not a good idea for those not familiar with narrow, winding roads where parts are one lane and someone has to pull into the side of a hill to let another driver pass. beachchick
