Cliff Walk/Newport ,Rhode Island

Recommended Posts

My husband will also be visiting Newport during our New England Cruise. In regards to Newport and the Cliff Walk, is there bus service to the end of the walk if we choose to start at the end, or would you suggest starting at the beginning?

We did the walk back in 2004. We started at the beginning and it was a very enjoyable walk. Although I do recall some sections of the walk required some effort. We returned to the ship walking back along Bellevue Avenue.

There are numerous post concerning CW at the Ports of Call board, New England forum - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20

Here's a thread that covers a lot including CW; I hope you would read the entire thread, 8 pages long - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1073094

another CW thread with excellent pictures linked in the first post - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1223367

But to answer your question, there is no bus service that takes you to the start of CW (north end); there is a seasonal bus that serves the end, south end, which happens to be the unimproved portion of CW. I normally don't recommend doing the unimproved portion of CW.

There are some pictures here of CW:

The first link includes general information; at the second link, go to the TOC at the bottom and look at the pictures in #'s 6 & 7 which will give you an idea what you'll be walking at the south end of CW.

To get to CW by bus and return, you would take a route #67 bus which serves the mansions on Bellevue Ave. You will enter CW about .7 mile from the start. I would recommend walking from north to south on CW.

Just read all my posts in the second link. If you have any questions, just ask.
