Booking cruise, cancelling & rebooking

Friends of ours are going on an already-booked cruise in the Fall...they want to book an additional cruise with us for next year. Can they book the cruise now, book again while on their upcoming cruise and then cancel the first reservation? I don't see why it cannot be done as a stateroom is still being booked and they are just getting credit for booking onboard.
