Waterproof camera

I have been through quite a few cameras...Nikon (pics too dark with no flash, too washed out with flash), Canon (shutter too slow), Olympus Stylus (my waterproof camera that sprung a leak halfway through my last cruise). I bought a Sony Cybershot a few years ago and it's always given me awesome pictures. So I bit the bullet and got the Sony TX5 waterproof digital, and I'm really pleased with every aspect of it. It's easy to use, takes great quality pictures in twilight, low light, full sun, flash, underwater, ANY time and ANY situation I've used it. The way the lens interprets the light and capture the color are really impressive. It's a bit pricey but well, well worth it. I'll put some pics taken with it below. I am a big "picture person"...no better souvenirs from my travels or just every day with my kids as they're growing up than good pictures to capture the moments and memories.

My family and I are sailing on the Carnival Legend in Nov and we are planning on doing some cave tubing and some some swimming and doing the stingrays. I want a good waterproof camera that will take great pictures. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg if I can help it. So what kind of waterproof cmaeras do you guys have? Also what about the water proof cases? Do they really work?

We use an Olympus that is water proof to 10 feet and have had good results with it. Easy to use, compact and I think cost less than 200$

I was suprised to find out that they have disposable waterproof cameras for about $12.00 at Target/Walmart. I have an expensive digital and I plan to take most of my non water pics with that.

The disposables have 27 shots per camera. If anything they are good for the kids to take in the water. :p!

Also true, but essentially for kids only. You will find the pictures will be grainy and low quality. About what you'd expect for $12, in other words ;)

If you want the quality under water shots, go with a better camera that costs more up front but will give you years of use for the buck :D

We had an Olympus, used it for a couple of years with OK results. Just last month, I jumped into the South China Sea for some snorkeling, turned on my Olympus, and nothing happened! :-( I had just changed the battery and must not have closed the case securely... It filled with water and that was the end of that! I just bought a Sony Cybershot DSC-TX5... The out-of-water pictures are fantastic and the camera has some additional features that the Olympus didn't have... I spent about $400 on it...

Walmart has the Olympus x560 waterproof camera for $79 with free shipping today (8-26-2010) - online only. It's their value of the day. I don't know anything about the quality of the camera, but it's a good price for a waterproof digital camera.

Cannon D10~! Shot my entire trip on it. 500+ pictures. Went down 30+ feet without problems of any kind. In underwater mode color correction is very good. Extra powerful flash for better pictures underwater. Be sure and order an extra battery and larger memory card with it. about $310 but worth every penny. Stop worrying about damaging a normal camera. Get one of these and just throw it in your backpack with no worries.

The Canon D10 and Olympus 8000 Tough volley goes back and forth.

I have purchased 3 of the Olympus 8000's (two for daughter) and one for my wife. All three are(were) excellent. One is at the bottom of the Comal river in New Braunfels. Now the other two have the floating straps.

Photo quality is good but not excellent. The Canon is very good, but not what you'd get from a external moving lens camera. The trade-off is both are better than the other models for what they are made to do.

The lesser priced Olympus gets you 10' or so and in the reviews online many have leaked. The 8000 is worth the $100 more if you consider the price you paid for your vacation.

I'd buy a Canon in a heartbeat. The girls in my house liked the Olympus; estrogen wins.

I have 3 Canon DSLR cameras and they are just incredible. Here are some recents from our Conquest trip, and the stingray images in Cayman are with the Olympus.

Both are shockproof, so think about the times you've dropped your camera or phone with less than delightful results. These cameras can take that kind of abuse.

Whatever you do, download the images of your vacation each day to a laptop computer. We buy large enough memory cards where I don't delete them from the card. That gives us two sources of each image when we get home.

Enjoy.

Have used the disposible Kodak in the past, for $12 they are great. But after doing some online research I am going to use the Fuji underwater disposible in Dec to swim with the stingrays and the dolphins. It gets great reviews.

Disposables are not going to work for cave tubing. You need a flash if you want to take any pictures inside the cave, and u/w disposables with a flash are $$$$. Better off buying a waterproof digital.

After watching 4 (yes, 4) Olympus cameras spring a leak in salt water (brother's 710, MIL 6000, my 850, my 8000), needless to say I will never use them again. I had no problems in regular water, but only my brother's camera didn't leak the first time it was exposed to salt water.

I ended up going to a more pricey option, Canon PowerShot S90 with underwater housing. I traded my S70 and housing for my first Olympus, so I'm used to the bulky (and expensive setup). Takes AMAZING pictures, but I've only tested it in the pool so far.

Thanks for this...although it makes my decision harder! I had pretty much decided on a Canon D10 based on pictures on this forum, plus comparison reviews I read on digital camera websites. But the Sony is newer and not so many reviews or comparisons available. However, I've had a Sony Cybershot for years and been very happy with it, and usually very happy with Sony products in general, so I've been interested in the TX5. It's more expensive than the D10, though Sony products often are more pricey.

I was very happy with the Canon D10.... I wanted a camera that

could go deeper then 10 feet, because the water is so clear in the

Caribbean that I was down 12 or 15 feet chasing a fish before I even

realized it.
