serene sea Posted June 11, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 11, 2004 I certainly agree with many that people will complain to almost anything. However, why would you complain or take offense to cruisers who immediately change their clothes after dinner on formal nights? What is so wrong with wanting to be comfortable? Men, if you wear a suit for work all week, I am sure you are sick of that buttoned collar and tie, long sleeves and tight fitting shoes. Ladies, you must hate that strapless bra, pantyhose, the high heel shoes and for some (especially with all that food) girdles! So what is the big deal? Just how many of you, run to your cabin and grab those comfortable clothes?
garnetjanet Posted June 11, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 11, 2004 We usually have early seating, so we leave the formal clothes on since we don't have time to change. If we have time before the evening show, we will change (only happened 1 or 2). I am comfortable, however, since I wear long dresses with out pantyhose and flat comfy sandals (since no one really sees my feet )! MiniMom57 Posted June 11, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 11, 2004 We always dress in formal wear (long gown, dark suit) for dinner, take a stroll around the ship after dinner, then get into comfy clothes in time for the show and late night activities. girlzillla Posted June 11, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 11, 2004 We usually change right after dinner. I wear a fancy gown and DH a tux. I hate walking in heels and shorts or capris are so much more comfortable. I came up with this idea for not having to wear panty hose with high heels. If you have a long gown, this will work, go to the shoe department and get a pair or two of those socks they put out to try on shoes with and wear those with your heels, no one can see them and your feet don't hurt. PhoenixCruiser Posted June 11, 2004 #6 Share Posted June 11, 2004 On the rare occasion when we attend dinner on formal nights, we too change clothes. We play dress up for work, so while on vacation we relax and are comfortable. ### Navigator of the Seas 6/26/04

abridalmaven Posted June 11, 2004 #7 Share Posted June 11, 2004 I have given up with uncomfortable clothes, both regular and formal and have found beautiful ones that are really comfortable even the bras and shoes. Where there is a will there is a way And since I buy a clip on updo, it take me about 5 minutes to do my hair. Nitra Posted June 12, 2004 #8 Share Posted June 12, 2004 Well since I dont wear strapless bras or girdles, and I find formal clothes to be comfortable but then Im a girly girl and am more comfy in a skirt and cute shoes than in jeans or shorts and tennis shoes. I sometimes change but very rarely. I dont dress up for work, not like on a cruise, so I enjoy dressing for dinner every night. I have long hair so it is easy to fix. I dont care if others change, I dont really care what others do as far as dress goes, if they feel good looking like they are going to work in the garden, and I have seen some people dressed that way, ratty shorts and tshirts and dirty tennis shoes, then more power to em! Guest OBAYbee Posted June 12, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 12, 2004 I usually change out of heels and jewelry too. New Years Eve on Mariner, I was dressed to the hilt, until midnight... then went..put on some jeans and a sweatshirt and had a ball!
RM Posted June 12, 2004 #10 Share Posted June 12, 2004 I guess lots of people believe that dressing up is part of the cruise experience and a maritime tradition. I usually stay dressed but when I do change it's dress pants and a sparkly top. Up next Mariner of the Seas Then Jewel of the Seas

Sophie Posted June 12, 2004 #13 Share Posted June 12, 2004 Another vote for changing after dinner here, though sometimes we do stay dressed up and go to the casino for awhile before heading back to our cabin to get comfortable. FinelyCruising Posted June 12, 2004 #14 Share Posted June 12, 2004 We have done it both ways and now I have learned to find evening clothes and shoes that are confortable. If they are not, then I don't buy them anymore. But, more than changing after dinner, we dress for dinner on formal nights, which is more than I can say for some others. CSW Posted June 12, 2004 #15 Share Posted June 12, 2004 Without fail, we make a bee-line back to the cabin to change. If we go to see the shows, we've slipped in the balcony seats in back so as not be noticable in our casual wear. Shows you how observant we are, we thought we were one of the very few doing the quick change. CSW
trish1c Posted June 12, 2004 #16 Share Posted June 12, 2004 We dress for work every day -- suit & tie for him, suit, pantyhose & heels for me. We dress for formal nights too -- tux & sequined gown. We enjoy that! The clothes are not uncomfortable. If your dress clothes are uncomfortable, you probably are wearing the wrong sizes. On our 1st cruise we were literally the only 4 people (us & our table mates from dinner) at the midnight buffet who were still dressed. Everyone else was casual. Did it ruin or evening? -- of course not! Some woman actually grabbed my SO & dragged him into a conga line saying she couldn't resist a man in a tux. Was I bit disappointed that more people weren't dressed? Yes, a little. I like the elegance of it all. Did I draw any conclusions about my fellow passangers as result of their attire? Yes, they are smart; it's entirely too hot on deck for a man to be in that many layers (undershirt, long sleeve tux shirt, jacket) outside. serene sea Posted June 13, 2004 Author #17 Share Posted June 13, 2004 Hmm, I posted this topic on the Princess board and received many (probably TOO many) responses regarding being inconsiderate, self centered, and disrepectful. It really is a joke. There is definitely second thoughts on cruising with that kind of mentality.
madforcruising Posted June 13, 2004 #18 Share Posted June 13, 2004 No comlaint here. I don´t care what other people wear, although I have my own thoughts to people in a T-shirt on formal night in the dining room. But as I said, I think about it and don´t care anymore. I have to feel comfortable and I do in formal wear. So I don´t change. Just a question, why are you dressing yourself in uncomfortable wear? Brad1185 Posted June 13, 2004 #19 Share Posted June 13, 2004 Unfortunately formal wear especially suits are more uncomfortable than wearing shorts. A shirt and tie is more uncomfortable than a t-shirt. hard dress shoes are more uncomfortable than flip flops. Its a simple fact. Your on vacation, why would I want to dress up like I do every day for work. As soon as dinner is over, Im changed. mikesteg Posted June 13, 2004 #20 Share Posted June 13, 2004 I'll agree that shorts are generally more comfortable than long pants, but no so much when the theatre is cold. I loosen the tie and usually the jacket before the show, and I'm fine. A loose t-shirt is more comfortable than the shirt and untied bow tie hanging around my neck, but damn I look good that way! After the show and before the hot tub, the suit comes off. I don't dress back up for the midnight buffet. To me, flip flips are pretty much unbearable so obviously I won't agree with that assertion. A good pair of dress shoes is just as comfortable as sandals IMHO. They just don't look very good with shorts... Mike

yarlenna Posted June 13, 2004 #22 Share Posted June 13, 2004 Much of the experience of a cruise is an experience of atmosphere. Look at the lengths to which cruise lines go to provide an exotic atmosphere. All the glass, the atriums, the "art", the sweeping stair cases, the carefully chosen theming can be part of the mood they are trying to create. OK, you are dressed to the nines, you are entering a decorated night club for a romantic experience. Another cruiser comes in wearing sandals and a t-shirt. Your experience is immediately changed from the romantic eveining in a posh resort to a day at an amusement park. All the decoration in the world cannot change the atmosphere now. Work like a dog. Live like a pauper. Save all your money. Then Cruise! My gif kitties have gone to cyber heaven so that dial up cruisers don't have a problem getting their posts read. firsttimecruiser77 Posted June 13, 2004 #24 Share Posted June 13, 2004 I can understand the idea of atmosphere, although, for me personally, people changing from formal wear to something more comfy doesn't detract from the atmosphere. I think people should dress appropriately in the dining room, especially on formal night. I don't care if they do whatever is comfy for the rest of the evening. As for us, we keep our formals on for a little while and enjoy seeing each other dressed up, and then we change depending on what our plans are. Mark_K Posted June 13, 2004 #25 Share Posted June 13, 2004 I doesn't bother me one way or another what people wear. (As if what someone else is wearing could ruin our evening.) What my DW and I normally do is stay dressed through both dinner and the show (or the show and dinner), after that if we're going to stay up, out & about, we change into more comfortable attire. ---------------------------------------------------------- "Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits" Mark Twain "Nothing so needs reforming as other people's formal night attire, poolside attire, child rearing practices, walk-talkie usage, chair hogging, seat saving, line cutting ..."
