casino funding

We're sailing on the Emerald next week, and although I've tried to search the boards, I haven't found a clear answer.

Can somebody explain if a fistful of cash is needed in order to game at the tables? I have found that you can go to the casino cashier and place a charge to the cabin account and then get cash, but it seems that there is a 3% service charge for this.

Others have said that inserting the cabin card into a slot machine will allow you to place a charge to the cabin account for $XXX, and then you can go to the cashier to cash out.

If gaming at a table, can I hand over my cabin card and as for $XXX dollars in chips to play blackjack or any other table games?

Basically, I don't want to have to bring a bankroll with me to the casino, although it's perfectly alright if I have to leave with a bankroll when the cruise is over.

Does anybody have any input or advice?

We have found the best way to do this is to send yourself casino credits. You can call Princess and have this done in any amount you wish and it will be charged to your credit CARD upon the order. When you get to your stateroom, you will find vouchers there to cash in at the casino cage and they will redeem them for cash to play any games you wish.

You are not restricted to using this cash (once you receive it onboard) in the casino. So if you win big that first night, you can just keep any remaining cash from these gifts for yourself.

We play slots by "charging" our on board account. There is no fee. Just sit at a machine, open an account according to the directions. You can "charge" your account up to $1500 per day.

You would not believe how easy this is. The directions are attached to every machine.

I could do it with my eyes closed two weeks ago.

Mike:)

Just something to add to Toto's reply re calling Princess to order and charge casino credits. You have the added bonus of earning points or whatever rewards your credit card pays when you do this. Once you have the cash, use it however you like. We have used this method to avoid carrying large sums of money when we fly to our disembarkation point.

In answer to your question:

Does anyone know the service charge for using the ATM? When the wife and I went on the Sapphire last month the ATM charged 6.00 plus any fees that your bank charged. I opted not as I am a tight wad and dont like to waste too much of my money :D

I knew that CC members would have some good suggestions.

I'm intrigued by the slot machine as ATM method. So, if I understand this right, I can just go to the slot machine, and acquire some amount of casino credit, and then just stop playing the machine (or never play the machine), and then go to the casino cashier and cash out the credit?

The casino gift credit also is a great approach, although it seems to require a littel bit of planning in order to call Princess and get the gift sent to myself.

Thanks again.

The only thing about using the slots as an ATM is that I recently read where a passenger tried to do that and the casino cashier alerted the casino manager and the passenger was stopped from doing it again. I have only read one report about this, but it would not surprise me if soon we don't see more reports of those trying to escape the 3% service charge by using the slots as an ATM without the added fee. So, just a word of warning that it has been reported here on CC in the past that they are getting wise to this way of getting extra cash onboard. ;)

Yep, I saw it happen on our last cruise, where a passenger was doing it everyday and by day 3, they told the woman she could only pull $250 a day. When you take a big draw on your cruise card at a slot machine, the purser desk gets a warning because they have to make sure you even have money on your credit card, to cover the amount you are pulling from your account. The easiest way is to send your self OBC and then you can use it for anything you charge to your ship account, whether it is gambling, wine, spa services, or excursions. We always send enough OBC to cover any of our expenses, so we don't have a larger balance do at the end of the cruise.
