Rock Star Karaoke

I have not heard of this. I use to enjoy the Karaoke but my last cruise it was the same 4 people singing all the songs, wannabe singers. It was so annoying. Not that they didn't sing well but it was boring! I hope it does not happen on my next cruise.

It is indeed new, and as stated, on 7 night or longer cruises. While I have not witnessed this on a Carnival ship as of yet, RCCL has been doing this for a number of years... Just not sure if they have continued it. It is not too bad, but the same thing can happen where a couple people do all of the singing. There was always someone there running the event and they were excited to do so, and the band was quite talented to change keys or even keep up/slow down for the singers. I was certainly a different atmosphere than the standard karoke. We really enjoyed it...

We saw this on the Conquest in July, and it was really fun and entertaining. We had been to watch regular Karaoke most nights, but did not see this until the very last night (they did have it several times, we just missed it). I love live music and wished we had seen it sooner because it added a whole new level to the experience. Even the same people singing the same songs we had heard during the regular karaoke were more entertaining. Hoping to see it again on our next cruise.

We're sailing "Legend" in 3 weeks, and I'm really looking forward to seeing, and participating in this new venue! I love regular karaoke, but even more LOVE singing with a live band. When we return, I'll give y'all my honest opinion of how it went.

Sky & Linda,

I'll be checking this out in person myself in 3 1/2 weeks. I, too, was hoping to get a look at the complete list. Wondering how it has been going over so far.

Well, if the band will switch keys, I'll be able to participate, from the partial list I've seen.

Hopefully, our CCers will be able to answer some more of our questions before we sail.

Sky, are you back before Oct. 2?

Totally key dependent :o,

Were you participating? Or are you one of the critical people that sit in the crowd and make it uncomfortable for others to get up and sing because you are so judgmental. Karaoke is supposed to be fun, not a talent contest.

The first couple of days of a cruise .... it may simply be a matter of no one signing up.

If no one else signs up...I will sing repeatedly !!!

I'll do my best to get a "shot" of the song list. I'm really anxious to see what they offer. I, LOVE the standards, and the big band numbers.

We sail "Legend" on Sept 26th, and return Oct 2nd, then do "Miracle" on Nov 11th, and return from that 8 day on Nov. 19th. I sure hope this thing is a HIT, and I truly love singing with a live band.

mssevie,

Was this held in the main show lounge or one of the smaller lounges?

Thanks for everyone's input.

On the Conquest it was called "Super Star Live", and it had a live band and a back up singer. It was held on 3 nights in the Degas Lounge on deck five aft, which is the same lounge that they hold regular karaoke.

I've done live band karaoke in several places. In most cases, the song list is limited to about 70 or 80 songs, instead of the hundreds a KJ may have on CD.

That's still a lot for a band to play/rehearse.

Some places will only allow 1 song per person, per night and will only play given song only once per night. I do not know what Carnival's rules will be, but its still WAY more fun/cooler that a cd !!!!

and do so over and over again...

I saw John Heald wrote about this, I just hope they have it on the Triumph when I leave on Oct. 16...

But, you can find out for me when you go on your B2B.

It is my understanding that it is only on 7 day cruises....but I may have read that incorrectly.

I can't believe we missing each other by two stinking cruises....

our timing stinks!!!

Just of the dream on 9/3

they had it several nights ( called super star) . Most of the time it was in the large aft bar/comedy club ( on the Dream its called the burgandy room). Once they had it on the casino lounge

There are over 100 songs to choose and a good cross section of music not dated at all.

They had a host who did intro's ( was different from the reg. karoke host)

The band was the same band who did the music on all the stage shows.

My SIL rocked it!

Hopes this helps

On the Conquest in May of this year, we got seated for karaoke about 5 minutes after opening and they list was all full and nobody else could sign up for songs. The same three people sang over and over and over....... We tried on another evening and got there on time and ther was one spot left; so someone in our group got to sing once. We just gave up and didn't go to karaoke the rest of the cruise.

There were lots of comments from other people who wanted a chance to sing, but the list filled up quickly with the same people. There has to be a better way; maybe do a rotation and new people on the list and fill in with the repeaters??

What you're describing really stinks, and is MOST unusual! Trust me, I've done karaoke on at least 20 Carnival cruises, and I've NEVER seen that happen. They normally rotate the new singers in with the repeaters, so that no one sings over, and over again. On the other hand, I've had the host BEG me to sing again, and even call me up, and put something on when I didn't even sign up, simply because there were no singers signed up! I don't mind doing that, but I don't want to be the guy who took over the karaoke either! Normally, karaoke, and hopefully the new "SuperStar Karaoke" or whatever it's called will work out well. I personally, can't wait! :D

Almost 40 Carnival cruises here and I have NEVER seen the sign up list booked up after 5 minutes.

Even on the last couple of nights....it takes about an hour to get things really rolling.....

Now what I have seen (on just about EVERY cruise) is people show up with 30 minutes of karaoke left and then complain when all the slots are full. It never fails....especially on the last night.

On our Elation cruise last month, I did not even sign up. The karaoke host just called me up when he wanted me to sing.... :D

Oh well, Sky, I guess you'll just be getting ready to get off when I'm heading out the door to catch our group bus. I hope you find a nice selection of tunes and bring the house down.

Hopefully, some other karaoke junkies will see this thread and let us know how it's going on Carnival.

The printout I have from John's blog says Rock Star karaoke, but it's still new so maybe some of the ships are calling it by different names.

It's been awhile since I fronted in a live band (by choice), so this should be a real hoot. At my karaoke show, I accept multiple slips at one time from my singers, in fact I encourage it, but I keep a rotation going and even keep a list. That way anyone who accuses me of playing favorites (and some will, don't ya know?) can see how the roster repeats and how I fit the newcomers in. (But if someone hands me a slip about 1:10, and I've got a bunch of slips from people who have been there since 9:30, you can bet who I'm gonna call up unless I know they're a show stopper or related to the owner :p!!!!) I've never been on a cruise ship where all the spots were taken right from start-up either, but maybe some hosts/hostesses run their shows differently. Personally, I like to be fair. When you work in the same bar every weekend, you like people to stay happy and come back often. Guess that's not a consideration on a cruise.

Thanks all for your input. Keep it coming.

that's kinda hard to believe about singers signing over and over and no one else can sing... when i used to kj shows at a bar if you signed up more than once, the next selection was not put in the queue until you had finishing singing (so anyone else who signed up between your songs would be in front of you.)

couldn't imagine on the ship shows were done too much differently....

I am a Karaoke Host here where I live. I have never heard of that either. I start out rotation fairly. If someone turns in 5 song selections, that person sings one song and then is put in rotation with everyone else until his/her turn comes up again. A new singer gets to sing right away. and then gets put in rotation with everyone else. If the host on the ship, knows what they are doing, it will be done the fair way.:)
