luv2getaway Posted September 13, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 13, 2010 We would like to rent a car for the trip to Olympia. We are a group of 6 people. Do they have a van available or is it more economical to rent 2 smaller cars. Also, can we reserve this ahead of time or is it OK to just rent when we get off the ship? Rare Hlitner Posted September 13, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 13, 2010 We figured that one-day somebody would ask this question so have the answer. There is a small local rental car company located in Katakolon just outside the port area (it is right in front of you as you get to the main street (the only real street) about a 2 min walk from the ship. The place is called Dionysios Diplas Tourism Enterprises (most of their business card is in Greek) and they have pretty cheap rental cars. They have a web site at http://www.rentacarkatakolo.gr and their direct e-mail is diplasd@rentacarkatakolo.gr. We did not actually rent a car on our last visit but did stop and chat with the manager of this place (and get his card) and would use them in the future. numbersix Posted September 13, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 13, 2010 Agree with Hank...we rented from DIAS in August...nice people...40 Euro (all-in) for a Fiat Panda 5 seater for the day...120 kms incl, which is plenty for Ancient Olympia, and back, plus nearby beach...we had a great day. I can't see needing to book unless it's very high season, or there are several ships in that day, and you're one of the leter arrivals, or unless you might need an automatic (always in short supply in Europe). Drop them an email about the availability of a van, or larger car. Kevin

ClaireKar Posted September 24, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 24, 2013 There is Avis rent a car in the port of Katakolon, just 100 meters from where the ship docks. We checked the local rent a car first, but it was more expensive than AVIS plus AVIS offer unlimited kilometres, so we could visit both Olympia and Kourouta beach (a really beautiful sandy beach just 20 minutes drive from Katakolon.) They gave us a realy helpful map (the other company just had a small map of Olympia site, not helpfull at all for directions on how to get there) and explain us everything about Olympia and the way to Kourouta (couldn't be easier, just one street). All AVIS people where very kind and helpfull with excellent English and customer service. They really help us with everything. I recommend them to anyone who visit KAtakolon!! Pre-reserved by e-mail, but no payment or card details needed - we gave him a time & he agreed to reserve us a car as long as were reasonably on-time. Located right opposite the port gate, couldn't be easier. Clean & up-together newish car, with aircon, 40 (or was it 45?) euros, card or cash, & we put in 10 euros petrol for the drive to Olympia, about 20 - 25 mins away. No worries. Free parking in the streets outside Olympia. But it was just so damned hot, we sat over a beer & decided we really weren't that interested in yet another ancient site. So we meandered around the country roads instead. Please don't tell Cynthia (cruisemom) that we got there & couldn't be bothered to go in :o:D JB :)
margbem Posted September 24, 2013 #9 Share Posted September 24, 2013 We have just returned from our cruise and also rented from Avis. We paid €35 euros for a very new Corsa and then put €15 of petrol in. The office gave detailed instructions and a map for getting to Olympia and a beach near Katakolon. Much cheaper than a cab! Now JB, I just cannot imagine a Brit needing hot weather as an excuse to have a pint (or is it a liter in Greece). Hank

Definately cheaper than a cab. They wanted 100 euros only to take us to Olympia!! So, we chose AVIS too, cheaper than taxis or any other rent a car company there. maryann120 Posted April 9, 2014 #18 Share Posted April 9, 2014 I've also used Avis while in Katakolon after reading good reviews on line. It's true, they all were very professional, with excellent English. Their map was very helpfull as well. They do have half day rental option on their web-site (http://www.katakolo-rentacar.com). You can send an inquiry and they will reply with all available cars they have for that day, any equipment you might need plus useful information you'd know before getting there.
