sanders Posted September 20, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 20, 2010 Chacchoben Mayan Ruins or Kohunlich Mayan Ruins? Are these suitable for someone who uses a manual chair but can transfer and walk short distances? Thanks.:)
Professional Diver Posted October 7, 2010 #2 Share Posted October 7, 2010 Both are good. Chacchoben is about an hour away from Mahahual and the Costa Maya Pier while Kohunlich is 2 hours away. Here is a little bit more information on both Mayan Ruins. Chacchoben is a Maya word meaning "Red corn." The ruins were restored by INAH (History and Anthropology National Institute). It was discovered in 1972 restoration started in 1994 and it opened to the public in 2002. Hours are 8:00 – 5:00 Kohunlich was discovered in 1967 and is best known for its Pyramid of the Masks. It is one of the oldest structures at Kohunlich, built before 500 AD. The building has a giant staircase flanked by six huge heads modeled in stucco. CowPrincess Posted October 7, 2010 #3 Share Posted October 7, 2010 Have not been to Kohunlich, went to Chacchoben. Re a wheelchair there, the paths are gravel, not sure how that would work for someone in a chair. And there's one area that has a lot of roots and such.... here's a pic of the root-y area. I cannot remember if there was a detour available to the rest of the non-root-y portions of the site. http://pictures.cruisecritic.com/showp...hp?photo=17479

navybaby1113 Posted October 9, 2010 #5 Share Posted October 9, 2010 Someone in a wheelchair is going to miss the best parts of Chacchoben. There's a part at the end of the tour where you have to walk up these really steep steps (that's the only way up there). Some of the coolest ruins that I got to see on this tour were up those steps. Here's a picture of the steps you have to climb
sanders Posted November 2, 2010 Author #6 Share Posted November 2, 2010 Thanks... didn't get to the ruins when I was there as they were worried about the chair but had a good time anyways.
