Just off the Dream-Horrible cigar smell from room next door

Why is that this society feels if it's something they don't do, no one should do it or certain laws or rules should be enacted because of their whimpering and whining?

 

Because we had one chain smoker ruin the enjoyment of 3 families (2 cabins down wind, and one above). When one person can make 12 people leave their balconies... its just bad business for Carnival.

 

Now I agree, that most smokers are not chain smokers but this person was, so it helps me make a example stand-out very clearly. As Carnival is closing more parts of the ships to smokers, the balconies are becoming the hang-out of hardcore chain smokers.

 

Everyday non-smokers learn to speak-up and we are getting use to more-and-more resorts offering fresh air and non smoking happy vacations. So the trend is to complain when Carnival traps you next to a smoker for the week. I'm glad to see more vocal non-smokers speaking-up, instead of suffering in silence like we use to do.

Me too!! WHile I'm not a fan of cigarette smoke I find it tolerable. Cigar smoke though makes me nauseious. So what would happen it a passenger becomes ill due to the smoke?

A cruise vacation is not just about you....there are thousands of people on the ship that would like to enjoy their vacation as much as you. Just because you may not partake in a certain habit, it's not up to the ship to accommodate your every request. Hotels don't do it, though they do offer smoking/non-smoking floors, and yes many hospitals now have stopped those from smoking anywhere on the grounds. To think that you should be singled out as a person that could create a new rule simply because you don't like something someone else is doing is just ludicrous.

 

What happened to the days of enjoying the fact that you're on a vacation and literally allowing things to fly into the wind? People tend to be vocal about everything, and nobody gives a flying hoot. Get over yourselves, if you don't like something, there are options. Choose another vacation or cruiseline, but don't try to punish those that have habits because you don't. BTW, I don't smoke, but will puff on occasion while on a cruise - not sure why, just the motion of the ocean I guess. However, those that have paid their hard-earned money deserve the same vacation as I. Geesh...

The question can also be asked in reverse. What makes someone think that because they have a bad habit like smoking, everyone around them should have their vacation negatively impacted? I am now a non-smoker but smoked for many years. I was NEVER an inconsiderate smoker. I would never have smoked in a non-smokers home, in those days I could smoke in my workplace and restaurants, but never did so because I did not believe that my right to smoke outweighed another's right to clean healthy air. And I have paid my "hard earned money" just like the smokers so I'm not sure why you have this twisted around.

The only real solution I see is for Carnival to only allow smoking in certain areas of the ship. Allow all the smokers to have cabins on the same floor, etc and then all the smell can be in one area. Those of us who don't want the smoke around us can be smoke free, and those who smoke can do so without feeling like they are bothering others.

I think that's a bit extreme. I hate cigarette smoke but can deal with it. There are plenty of places on a ship to escape all smoke. Very few places to smoke on ships anymore. Carnival is trying to please everyone. Remember when you could smoke everywhere? Non-smokers have more places than smokers. Enjoy them and if smoke is not your thing, avoid it.

When we booked our trip they never asked if I smoked so for you to say you pay more is wrong. I agree with the post above, if you ask nice smokers generally have no problem moving, its when you make those rude comments, most people will ignore the fact that your even there

I'll have to search that one. Since hookahs do not actually "burn" the contents (heat from coals are drawn over it) and it is filtered through water, there "should" be less smoke. Something tells me it might not have been shisha that they were smoking... Many shishas actually smell good; mint, fruit, spices, chocolate, etc.

Can't find the post you refer to...but...if a smoker is in a designated place to smoke there should be no problem.

 

If a non-smoker is in an area where smoking is designated they have nothing to complain about; they should move if they don't like it.

They may be referring to the fact that IF you want a nonsmoking room on the Dream or Splendor...you have to book a Spa cabin which is more expensive that an regular interior or balcony....

since when are non-smokers any more important than the smokers? we all paid for our vacations. the only reason one should complain is if the smoking policy isn't being followed.

I understand what you mean when you say they need to book a spa which is more money I wouldnt be happy with that either. I just feel that for someone to say that I should be charged more for the fact that I smoke is wrong also. My husband doesnt smoke and I am very carefull where and when I smoke. I assume everyone does. Either way Im sure im gonna have a great time on the dream. I will peak round to make sure I dont bother my neighbor on there balcony.:D

Ok to be fair if 75% of the US is non-smoking, 25% of the ship should be designated for us smokers, no?

 

We'll take the sports bar, cigar bar, steakhouse and lido deck, non-smokers get the spa and everywhere else... Fair enuff? :p

On the Freedom in Aug, I had been in the Victoriana lounge watching a game, When we left I wanted a cigarette, So I walked to the players bar. A smoking bar. I moved to the middle of the bar and lit one up.

 

Now you would have thought I committed a murder by the way the older gentleman was carrying on. He stated he was there first and watching TV. He went on and on. I spied the bartender and she was smiling and trying not to laugh. I looked at him when he was done and said I am sorry but you do know you are in a smoking area.

 

He grumbled as he left and was very nasty about it. Now mind you I was not the only one smoking. Now had he been polite and not demanding I would have moved to the other end of the bar by the casino.

I am a cigar smoker. Possibly one every day or so. Certainly one after a nice delicious meal. However, I am also aware of the fact that many people do not appreciate second hand smoke.

 

If I light up, I always try and make sure there is no one around to offend and certainly would never smoke in the cabin, but have smoked on the balcony. I never smoke if anyone is on the surrounding balconies.

This was our 9th cruise with Carnival. We thought that Butch was our favorite cruise

director to date. The food and service was fantastic. We loved the ship. We had

a cove balcony which was great. I love the fact that the pools had warm water this time

and the serenity area was great. We did Cable Beach in Nassau, Orient Beach in St.

Maarten, and Secret Harbor in St. Thomas. All Were beautiful!!!

 

 

Glad you had fun otherwise. I like the smell of cigars more than cigarettes

That's why we will see Carnival continue working towards rules that will help the 75% of us who don't smoke, enjoy our vacations without smoke.

I am a non-smoker and I still don't get why people get so upset. There is designated areas for smokers. Just don't go in those areas. This is just like the non-smoking cigar bars trial where everyone was so upset they had to walk anywhere near it.

Because we pay extra for a balcony.

 

Early in the morning instead of the fresh sea air and a breakfast on the balcony, we get the hacking noise of smokers rolling out of bed with smokers cough, as they rush to their balconies to have that first smoke in the morning.

 

Later as the ship pulls out of port in the afternoon, we want to watch from our balcony, but the smokers all light up again.

 

Next its that period of sunset while the wife is getting dressed for dinner, and I like to go out on the balcony, so do the smokers.

 

And last, before bed... sitting out on the balcony to watch the moon and the stars... the smokers all light-up one last time before bed.

 

If Carnival didn't randomly spread smokers and non-smokers through-out the ship's balcony cabins... we wouldn't have any problems.

LOL, And smokers don't pay extra? You can beat this to death. Nobody is more important than the other. Maybe CCL should make one side of the ship smoking and the other non as far as balconies go.

Do the math. One man with a smoking habit paying $1,200 can cause a problem for the 3 cabins around him (conservatively estimating 2 people per cabin) so 6 paying passengers worth $7,200 are being annoyed by one passenger paying $1,200.

 

Multiply this up-and-down both sides of the ship, as random smokers are placed next to groups of cabins without smokers, and you can see how the "bean counters" at Carnival will eventually get the message.
