Public beaches in Nassau

Are the public beaches in Nassau safe? I heard of Junkanoo beach and lighthouse beach being public. Or is it Cable beach that is public? I don't want to spend alot of money to go to the beach with a family of four. We only spend a couple of hours anyway. Does anyone know or have a suggestion?

Hi there"s is a good and safe the few times we were there public beach in Nassau .A little walk from the ships at the end of the ave .You can see the ships docked from there .And there"s is a Burger King not far from the beach to get some cold drinks !! We been there a few times and will heading there again next week on our cruise ! No life gourds !

We usually take the water taxi to Paradise Island, walk through the Atlantis portions that you can...sometimes stop for a beverage....then just up past Atlantis is a public beach (don't know the name of it) & you can pay a few bucks for chairs, etc. (if you want to). Last time we were there, we then walked up behind that beach to a restaurant which, if I remember correctly, was part of a small hotel because I recall a pool there. It was good for an inexpensive lunch & a couple drinks. It is very close to the beach & you will see a stairway that leads down to the public beach area...

 

To me, its much prettier than Cable Beach.

From what people have posted on here, it seems that the beaches are safe provided they're frequented by tourists. You want to stay away from the really remote beaches. You also want to keep all your valuables on you or have someone sit with your things (phones, cameras, wallets) while you're in the water. Theft is a concern whenever you go to a major tourist area, definitely not limited to the Bahamas.

 

Also, technically all beaches in the Bahamas are public at the waterline, it's just that they may not let you use a hotel's private beach access or beachfront property without paying. I remember reading on this board (maybe from Scubagirrl?) that the best parts of Cable Beach are inaccessible without a daypass. Cabbage Beach and Junkanoo I know have public accesses.

Junkanoo beach is maybe a 15 minute walk from the cruise boat...very easy to get to and safe. Some beach hut vendors are there selling food and beer ($2). wouldn't rent chairs (ratty looking) just bring your towels and you'll be fine. restrooms are also there.

went to junkaroo beach last week,terriable beach.Had local teenagers and a older guy casing our stuff the whole time we were there walking close to it and then asking if we were going in the water saying our stuff would be safe (yea right) Was asked if i wanted pot, glass and beer cans in the water and a rusty garage can, a man walked into the womens bathroom while my wife was changing into her swimsuit. A young girl tryed to put a braclet on my sons arm saying it was free and run away when i yelled at her not to you know the scam once he had it on his arm she would of demaned money. locals were giving us dirty looks the whole time we were there.

Mr Veendam is absolutley right! We love this spot and it's free...There are some locals that will try to rent you lounge chairs, and they sell ice cold Kaliks too, which my husband loves. You can walk there from the ship, it's about half way to the Fishfry. Just ask where's the Fishfry when you get off the ship and they'll point you in the right direction. You can't miss this spot.

 

If you are up to it, continue onto the fishfry for lunch, Conch Fritters and Cracked Conch are always a nice switch up from the lunch onboard the ship.

 

We've done this same thing twice and always felt safe even with small children in tow. My kids loved it so much they've dubbed our vacations as the 'boat to the beach'. In December, we're heading back to do it again:)

No, the only areas open to the public are the casino and Marina Village (and the crystal court shops.

 

You are no longer allowed to wander around the lobbies, check out the views or enter the property without a day pass or some sort.

 

DIGS aquarium passes are $40 and include only the aquariums..no outside venues or exhibits.

 

Beach Pass is $69 and includes aquarium and beach, but no pools, slides, lagoons or other areas on the property

 

All access pass is $135pp and includes everything except the COVE pools and beaches reserved for Cove and reef guests only.

 

Without a pass, you will be stopped by security as you enter the building.

We are making our first trip to Nassau in December with our kids 10 and 8. I think I'm understanding from what I've read that this is walkable from the ship, even with kids, and that there are restrooms as well as food available. Sounds great!

We walked through Atlantis last year without paying. It was such a disgusting dump, they should have paid us.

Sorry to go off topic a bit, but can you tell me more about the fish fry? Is it a restaurant? What would we look for? And how much time should we allow for walking to/from the fish fry?

The fish Fry is a group of locally owned restaurant (sort of rustic chicken shacks) with a public area and restrooms.

 

It's just another 5 minute walk past Junkanoo beach. If you are a walker.. about 20 minutes outside of town.. less than a mile.. just past Junkanoo Beach.

Service is VERY slow.. so you can easily spend 2 hours here..

Our family will be in Nassau in late Nov. Two grandparents, our 12 year old granddaughter, my 66 year old sister and our daughter in law. I find the more I read about beaches the more confused I become. We do not paying a small fee to go to a nice beach in front of a hotel but I am not sure which hotel offers the best deal.

I looked at Atlantis but it is so expensive for the day pass. Then I looked at Junkanoo and some people wrote about garbage and glass and rusty cans - so I was concerned about that...can you offer me a good suggestion as we love beaches and swimming and would like to have a fun day and not be sorry by picking the wrong location.
